Iowa LHP Sean Marshall (strained left hamstring) supposedly threw a full bullpen session yesterday.

Peoria C Josh Donaldson is on the bereavement list due to a family death.

Peoria 2B-3B Marquez Smith was named the MWL Player of the Week last week:

Marquez Smith, Peoria

.429 (9-21), 6 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO, 0 SB, .952 SLG

A slugger at Clemson University, the 5-foot-10 third baseman had only hit 12 home runs in three seasons of Minor League ball. But that was before last week. Smith powered three balls out of the yard and ran his season-high hitting streak to 10 games before having it snapped Saturday. The Panama City, Fla. native now has seven home runs and has already hit four triples this season.

ITI has a story on James Russell with good news on his "work in progress" curveball saying that it's coming along much quicker than he thought it would and that he can throw it for strikes now. Also, he's on a strict 85 pitch count (thanks to his college workload) which accounts for his multiple 5 innings or so outings.

AZ Phil at the ExST Cubs game:

Bryan Jost hit a HR; Nelson Perez, Junior Lake and Josh Vitters each hit a double and no other Cub got a hit today. Vitters didn't commit an error today. :) The pitchers - Yohan Gonzalez, Luke Sommer, Jon Mueller and John Muller - all struggled.

Jovan Rosa (starting DH) and Blake Parker the 2 Chiefs named to the MWL All-Star Team which is dominated by 9 Clinton LumberKings, 7 Beloit Snappers and 6 Kane County Cougars.

Hernandez thru 5 has allowed just 2 hits, 1 unearned run with a walk and 5 Ks. Four outs each on the ground and air, however 2 of the air outs were IF popups.

nice start for the roidless rob hernandez. the suspension may not be a terrible thing - he got to work on things with the instructionals, and the inning count won't be too high on his young arm.

That's his final line.

How much did Hernandez sign for again?

The bonus wasn't disclosed when he did sign and he wasn't a high profile signing, so it was likely a 5-figure bonus.

I don't know, but he was sent directly to the states at a rather young age, and directly installed into the regular rotation. Few guys the age he was when signed go straight to the states, or get the regular innings he got. Point is, by his first summer they were obviously treating him like a prospect. So it wouldn't surprise me at all if he signed for 6 figures!

Nice to see him with a strong debut.

Any update on whether or not Ceda is hurt, getting pulled after 4 good innings? Sure hope he's OK.

Didn't Raisin say it was a rain delay?

I'll take the double and walk but yeah he's struggling this season.

Fair point, Craig. He also signed on July 3 - signing that early in July would indicate he was a highly sought after prospect.

On the flip side, the Cubs tend to trump up a guy who signs for a 6-figure bonus so I'd have guessed we'd have heard more about him in 2005.
