Proposes trading Pie + Cedeno for DeJesus, German, + pitching prospect. I'm not saying I would do the deal, but he analyzes each player and how the trade would possibly work for both teams. Dejesus isn't the big, impact, lefty bat we were looking for, but he's a solid CF with an attractive contract.

Pass, pass, pass, pass.

Pie is either our immediate answer in CF or he's our best trading chit for a legit impact player. DeJesus is decent, but that's just not enough straight up. Then we lose a little more value in the Cedeno/German swap. I can't imagine the pitching prospect being anyone good enough to make the difference.

It's an idea I'd float if I were the Royals GM, but if I'm Hendry I'd say "for a package of decent players, you can get decent prospects. If you want a great prospect, offer a great player."

I don't feel like starting a new thread, but wouldn't it seem like the A's make a good match for us this year? Their offense is pretty awful, and they have an abundance of starters performing over their heads/really well. More specifically, but less practically, would DeRosa and Pie make a good base for Harden or Blanton? Cedeno at SS(I know, I said less practically) with a Theriot/Fontenot platoon at 2B probably will be relatively close to our current middle infield going forward, plus we get a significant upgrade in the rotation.

Unless the pitching prospect is someone like Luke Hochevar, or Daniel Cortes, I don't see how the Cubs should trade two players with good value (and yes, I do believe Felix Pie still has good trade value, regardless of his treatment by the Cubs) for a cheaper Johnny Damon clone, and a utility player the Cubs already have in Mke Fontenot and/or Mark DeRosa (when he is not starting). So unless the pitching prospect has some serious upside, I don't see this being a good enough trade for the Cubs.

Ehhhhhh...Harden's a horrifying arm injury waiting to happen and Blanton is mediocre. I'd take a pass on those two.

Blanton is an extreme ground ball pitcher who would be invaluable when the wind is blowing out. I'd try to find a package to keep DeRosa though. I think Cedeno and Fontenot would get exposed playing every day.

I stated that I'm not sure I would consider the deal, but we (Cub fans)have a tendency to overrate our prospects in trade proposals. I'm a big Pie fan, but unless he starts showing some offensive skills at the major league level, he will lose trade value quickly. Also, Pie is our top prospect, but isn't rated in the "can't miss" category outside of Chicago. Giving up Pie for a left-handed bat or a mediocre starter that's a 3 month rental might be a good idea to win it all in 2008, but it still leaves the same holes for the future. For all of the hopes and wishes of NSBB posters, Cedeno looks to be a utility IF now and in the future for the Cubs. On the other side, DeJesus is still reasonably young (28) and is a solid, cheap CF. I guess I probably wouldn't make the deal, but it's not as bad as it sounds initially.

I get what you are saying about Pie, but I still don't want this trade. I'm a big believer in the fungibility of decent players. There's never a good reason to trade much of value for a merely decent player. If your GM is of any caliber at all, you should be able to find one most of the time.

Pie isn't an elite prospect, but he's a very good one, and quite probably our only chance to trade for anything really worth trading for at the deadline.

This and I never, ever want Hendry trading with Beane again

As far as I remember, the only player that traded hands between those two clubs that became an impact player for their new team was Michael Barrett, and that was to the Cubs benefit. I don't see why Hendry should be scared of trading with Beane. They are good friends, and if Beane was that much better at trading he probably would have absolutely fleeced Hendry at least once over the last 5 years, and he just hasn't.

I don't particularly want Harden or Blanton though. You're going to be paying too much because other clubs know you need "the missing piece", and both of those guys have too many question marks to justify spending that inflated value on.

I was kidding around with my friend who is a Royals fan that he should give us DeJesus because...well the Royals suck and we deserve a left handed bat that can play good centerfield

Didn't think it could be a realistic proposition. Any chance we can actually get Joakim Soria to boot?

dejesus would certainly be an upgrade, but the cubs are giving up too much in that deal.

this made me laugh, though:

Cedeno, of course, immediately represents a massive upgrade on Tony Pena Jr, primarily because any animal that walks on two legs and has opposable thumbs ought to represent an upgrade.
