And which is worse? The years where they're competitive and then fold? Or years like 2000, 2002, and 2006 (arguably the worst team in Cubs history) where they simply aren't competitive in any respect?

I'll still go with the non-competitive years.

For all the pain and anguish, I need Cubs playoff baseball in my life every few years. Even if it ends in disaster. Being crappy year after year is a joyless existence.

Just wanted to point out that the 1977 Cubs were 47-22 on June 28th and finished the season 81-81. These threads are easy to bump :)

The 1985 Cubs were 35-19 at this point and finished 77-84.

The 1969 Cubs were 37-17 at this point and finished 92-70.

I think there's a real good chance the '85 Cubs would have fared much better had all 5 starters not gone down at one point, I distinctly remember Rick Sutcliffe pulling his hammy trying to beat out a grounder.

Try 100% chance. There's no way they wouldn't have done much better with major league starting pitchers rather than AA pitchers. Enough better to have returned to the playoffs? That's what we'll never know, although they would have had a good chance.

Agreed. I'd rather have my heart torn out in October than to not even care.

This is the best Cubs team any of us have ever seen.

That '84 club was really, really good; despite what happened in San Diego.

I won't argue with you in hopes that you are right.

I definitely think we are better than the '84 team. They had the Pythagorean wins of a 91-win team, which is good but nothing special.

About the only part of that team I'd take over this year's is back 3/5ths of the rotation. I like our offense, and I like our bullpen.

You wouldn't take Sandberg over Derosa? Derosa's good, but he's not Sandberg.

I'd take Dernier over Reed Johnson too for CF duties.

Mostly, I think the '84 Cubs compare better in terms of starting pitching. And that counts for plenty. I think I would take our offense so far this year over '84 though, I agree with Kyle on that.

Yeah, I think I misread his post the first time. He was talking about the offense as a whole, not position-for-position. That I would agree with.

Ah, I had forgotten about the fecal league standings. While it was fun to see them plummet in those standings last year over the course of the summer, I don't miss them.

I was just thinking today about whether this team is as good or better than '84. I think we need one more SP.

That 84 team had Sutcliffe and he had never done anything like he did in 84. He was good, but no one thought he'd be that good.

Scott Sanderson was above average.

Ditto for Eck.

Steve Trout wasn't bad, but he was far from great.

I think the 08 Rotation is better.

1969 Cubs through May 32-16 (+82 run differential) finished 92-70

1977 Cubs through May 28-16 (+35 run differential) finished 81-81

1984 Cubs through May 37-20 (+35 run differential) finished 96-85

1985 Cubs through May 37-17 (+32 run differential) finished 77-84

1998 Cubs through May 37-20 (+15 run differential) finished 90-73

2008 Cubs through today 34-21 (+89 run differential) finished ???

I think a more appropriate comparison is after the same number of games. So, after 55 games (the number the Cubs have completed this year):

1969: 37-18

1977: 36-19

1984: 31-24

1985: 35-20

1998: 31-24

2008: 34-21

I remember the great start the 1977 team got off to, but I didn't realize they were only 1 game off the 1969 pace.

From Cubs.com:

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time the Cubs had the best record in baseball entering June was 1908, the year they last won the World Series.

It's destiny. This is the year.
