On page two of Sunday's game thread, I mentioned the Pirates had some Cockiness to them.

viewtopic.php?f=26&t=48580&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=25

I was wrong.

As pointed out here:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08140/883128-63.stm

MAdesso: Soriano goes 5-5 with two homers and the Cubs still lose, whens the last time you've seen that done. Or better yet Whens the last time that was done and the winning opponent was the Buccos?

Dejan Kovacevic: That happens about as often as you see someone look that comfortable at the plate for three consecutive games without a single pitcher once sending him to the deck with a high-and-tight fastball. Which is to say it is extremely rare. ... That is an ingredient the Pirates very much need to add to their staff. Salomon Torres did it, and no one has done it in his absence.

This is why we're still under .500, and still not able to beat the Cubs. Hopefully, someone will develop an attitude soon.

Yeah, the missing ingredient for the Pirates has been guys willing to throw at people's skulls.

think about it, how many times have the Pirates had a winning season since Salomon Torres left? I'll give you a hint: it's a whole number that's less than 1

I just figured the lack of Jack Wilson left a "grittiness" whole on the team that they've been unable to overcome.

It would appear that the Pirate pitchers need to watch
for inspiration.

It's really amazing to see the break on the ball from that angle. You can't get that shot in a real game.

You're saying the ball was CGI in that video?

There's actually a lot more there than you think.

One place it's missing is the starting rotation. While Dike and Mahalom are better than last year, Snell and Gorz have been awful, and Duke and Mahalom haven't been better enough to make up the difference.

All else being equal, better starting pitching could easily have had us taking this past series.

Actually, Jack's playing. I wonder how many games his replacements have booted away.

Also, remember Bixler freezing at third base in the bottom of the 9th in one of the Cubs/Pirates games at PNC park.

Oh, his .260 average would be a hell of a lot better than what his replacements have done, too.

Headhunting on purpose no. Pitching tight inside with a purpose yes. Remember a few years ago when the Cubs pitching staff tied up Pujols and Bonds by pitching inside with a purpose? Wasnt it Bonds who threatend Prior after a HBP and Prior made a come and get you some motion back?

That is what Dejan K. means when he wrote that. I am amazed since I didnt get to watch any of the games that as hot a Sori has been that he hasnt been sat down yet, or at the very least forced to move his feet at least once since he has been on this hot streak.

In one game, yes. In general, though, you have good starting pitching. Zambrano (who was the one started we beat) and Dempster are both having good years. No starter on our staff is having a good year.

If either Gorzo or Snell pitched as well as they did last year (Not both, just one), we'd be over .500 now. If both did, we'd be knocking at your door.
