Didn't realize hart has pitched that well. It's only been 10 innings but the 14/2 k/bb is impressive.

Tony Thomas on his down season:

Baseball America"]Cubs’ Thomas Adjusts to FSL

Posted May. 19, 2008 12:50 pm by Ben Badler

At this time last year, second baseman Tony Thomas was increasing his draft stock with every game he played at Florida State. After leading NCAA Division 1 with 189 total bases, Thomas went from a fringy prospect to a top 100 draft pick, going 97th overall to the Cubs with the third pick in the third round.

Thomas, 21, hasn’t enjoyed the same offensive success this season with high Class A Daytona in the Florida State League that he had last year in short-season Boise, where he batted .308/.404/.544 in 214 plate appearances with 28 stolen bases in 30 attempts. This season, albeit in a less hitter-friendly park, Thomas is hitting .260/.311/.377 in 161 plate appearances with seven steals in nine attempts.

"The main difference is consistency with pitching," Thomas said. "Everybody from the starters to the bullpen is pretty good. In the Northwest League, you might have a guy who was dominant, and a guy who was just coming in to sweep up the mess. Everyone here has great stuff and is going to be around the plate."

Since the consensus among scouts is that Thomas’s fielding potential is average at best, he will have to kick his hitting performance up a notch, which he has the tools and pure hitting ability to do. But Thomas is also cognizant of how he can improve in the field.

"One thing is when I was turning double plays, I let my arms get all wide and long, and it was making me turn (double plays) a little slower," said Thomas, who is 5-foot-10, 185 pounds. "So now I’m keeping my hands closer to my body and turning double plays has been a little quicker. I have really long arms and sometimes I’d just let them go wild. Now I try to keep elbows close to body, which makes my transaction from the bag to first base a lot quicker."

Rich Hill was placed on Iowa's DL (retroactive to May 17) with back stiffness. Carmen Pignatiello was activated from the Iowa DL.

Dae-Eun Rhee is still at least 3 weeks away but we're into single digits on the Robert Hernandez countdown:

Peoria Journal Star"]Robert Hernandez is eligible to come off the suspended list May 28, provided the Chiefs play every game between now and then. The right-hander was suspended on opening day for 50 games for violating baseball's performance-enhancing drug policy.

Dae-Eun Rhee is still at least three weeks away. He is rehabbing in Peoria, but won't return to action until June at the earliest. A good bet would probably be the start of the second half.

Down at extended spring training, Mark Pawelek and Marcus Hatley are reportedly throwing well and could be ready for a promotion.

Assuming Hill will be on the DL for the minimum 7 days, I'm guessing he'll effectively skip his start since Iowa doesn't have an off-day coming up. I'm not sure how their rotation looks, but I figure he'll go on 9 days rest as opposed to 7.

Be nice to get all those guys in full season baseball throwing well. Hernandez and Rhee are probably the 2 best low minors pitching prospects. Pawelek still has a ton of upside.

I'm not sure that's accurate fom that source. Two is more like it.

I hope you're right. It'd be great to see Hernandez and Rhee pitching in Peoria by June...they're probably my two favorite prospects in the system.

Updates...

Iowa won 5-4. Pie is still hitless. Murton homered. Jason Dubois was listed at 1B for the I-Cubs (!), which leads me to believe that's a typo or the Cubs secretly re-acquired him at some point. Hart went 5 and struck out 6.

Tennessee is getting pounded 11-3. Mitch Atkins didn't make it out of the 5th, giving up 6 ER.

Daytona won 4-3. Adam Harben had a crappy outing, walking 6 and not making it out of the 4th inning.

Peoria got 4 hit and shut out. Cabrera went 5, gave up 5 ER, walked 3, gave up 5 hits, and struck out four.

Matt Murton doing well. Trade him while we can.

Felix Pie still looking for his first hit.

Cotts with a save. Ascanio with an ERA in the low 2s. Meanwhile, Chad Fox coninues to waste space in the pen.

I want Cotts nowhere near our team, but Asciano can't get up soon enough.

Tyler Colvin has now walked 5 times in his last 6 games to get his BB/PA to a very respectable .089. He's only struck out 5 times over that span also. He had a nice 9-24 streak going before his recent 0-5. If he keeps putting the ball in play and being selective, I think you will see Colvin go on a nice little hot streak pretty soon.

Already has as many walks (15) as he did last year in 324 fewer at bats.

Definitely good news.

Moderately good news, if any.

.238/.306/.381 with a 46/15 K/BB is still a very anemic line. Although that OPS may be about a 100 point jump from where it was a month ago.
