run is unearned according to Len

I hate that distinction so much.

Baseball stats would be so much better off if we stopped arbitrarily dividing between "earned" and "unearned" and "hits" and "errors."

I think there's a use for those stats, though. If there's a runner at 2nd with 2 out, and the pitcher throws a routine ground ball, and the fielder airmails the throw to first and the runner scores, that isn't the pitcher's fault.

If he gives up a ground ball of the exact same speed and difficulty, but it happens to be placed exactly in the hole between two fielders, is it his fault? If he gives up a fly ball to shallow outfield and the outfielder gets a poor jump?

Theres a use for RBI as well, but it doesn't mean it should be a mainstream and important stat

The fact that you brought up a marginal and rare occurrence to defend it makes me want to get rid of errors all the more

I don't disagree that there are flaws in how earned and unearned runs are kept, but I'm not in favor of getting rid of them alltogether.

Why pitch to the #8 hitter with a man on 2nd and 2 out? Walk him, get the pitcher and worry about next inning when you get there. The pitcher might knock one in once in every 25-30 ABs or so, but I would walk the #8 hitter every time.

Z does not look great today. Hopefully he settles down.

He just needs to throw strikes, this team can't really do too much damage

They are 4th in the league in runs scored...

And I can't figure out why. Their lineup doens't have that much punch and has a ton of holes in it

Their outfield leads baseball in VORP.

Compare their lineup by VORP:

8. Nate McLouth 22.5

10. Geovany Soto 19.7

19. Derrek Lee 15.8

24. Xavier Nady 14.9

30. Jason Bay 13.7

40. Aramis Ramirez 12.6

43. Kosuke Fukudome 12.5

45. Ryan Doumuit 12.2

47. Ryan Theriot 11.8

51. Mark DeRosa 10.6

In most cases, yes, but Z is one of the few pitchers who isn't an automatic out.

the pitcher is carlos Zambrano. He's not a .030 hitter

Also, there is no man on second, and there's only one out
