I like how Chen's been coming along lately. He might not have superstar potential, but he's performing well enough down in Peoria to make himself a prospect.

AZ Phil at Fitch:

  • Angel Guzman threw a simulated game (2 innings): good velocity, poor control (half his pitches were balls). Might get into an extended spring training game next week.
  • Kevin Kreier (above slot $100k bonus in 2006 draft) started and threw 3 and gave up 1 run (3 K/1 BB, 5 GO-0 FO).
  • Marcus Hatley followed with 4 scoreless innings, the longest outing by a pitcher at Fitch.
  • Harol Tolentino finished the game with 2 scoreless innings.
  • Jeff Rea and Matt Craig were in the lineup, Rea in the field. Both are getting close to leaving Mesa.
  • Cubs have a new pitcher from Venezuela - Israel Camacaro who signed in February and is already in the U.S. (i.e. the Cubs clearly think he's a good prospect).
  • And the third position player to convert to pitcher in the last month for the Cubs (following Jake Muyco and Andres Quezada) is LHP Luke Sommer.

Nothing good for Donaldson's numbers thus far, overall. But his BABIP is only .235. If he was hitting your standard .300 on BABIP, without otherwise changing his HR/BB/K rates, he'd be sitting at .265 with an OBP in the .310's.

Certainly not good, and routinely BABIP reflects the quality of contact a hitter is making, so it probably stinks for a reason. But sometimes there's some luck element involved as well.

Obviously none of his numbers are good. But 3 HR/11XBH in 112 AB's, that's fine. And his K-rate, 20K/112 AB, that's not good but it's not scary either. His walk rate is likewise poor but not scary. Point being, I think he's got a chance to get his numbers straightened out in time. He's not going to be the dominant star hitter that AzPhil was projecting, and to be competing but not dominating in A- at age 22 isn't that great. But I don't see his numbers and peripherals indicating as much hopelessness as goes with Tony thomas and Tyler colvin, who are K-factories without enough power or walks to justify.

I'm still high on Donaldson he's just off to a slow start and think over time he can still produce it took Soto awhile before he realized his potential. When do they move up Papelbohn? He's been throwing the ball well and my have a future in the Cubs bullpen down the line.

i just realized that kyler burke was white. at least i figured it out at this level; for whatever reason i assumed will ohman was black until i saw him pitch in a game for the big club.
