Because he is 11th in the NL in BABIP. Soto is 5th and Fukudome is 1st. All 3 of them will probably see a drop of .050 points of AVG or more as the season goes on. Though obviously none of them have a big enough sample size to clearly know what their BABIP will end up around.

Theriot has had a pretty good line drive percentage though, i think. Not that it's likely to continue, but it hasn't been pure luck either.

Could it be that perhaps he isn't as bad as the pro-Cedeno crowd would have you believe?

Cedeno is still a better fielder and has more power, no matter how good Theriot may look right now.

Problem is they both deserve a shot to start full time, but as long as DeRos doing his thing they wont. Theriot was the opening day starter, and as long as hes proving he can do the job, they're not going to take him out. I remember they were training Cedeno for center at one point, but I guess that didnt work out.

Problem is, Theriot is at his ceiling right now. Cedeno isn't.

And as long as he stays there, hes going to get playing time.

Could it be that perhaps people are making ridiculous judgements based on one month of data vs years and years of data?

Especially when he did this exact same thing last year. Started fire-hot then cooled off to being neifi-esque.

So if Lou is the genius everyone makes him out to be, he can rest Theriot more during the season and if he finally cools off completely, put in Cedeno as the regular SS. Ride the hot bat as long as possible.

I'm a big Cedeno fan, but he's no ARod. He has 1.039 OPS right now. He's above his ceiling

Cedeno is hitting for a higher average with more power. He's drawing walks more frequently. He's playing better defense, and not screwing up constantly on the basepaths.

I appreciate that Theriot has been hitting the ball well. But he hasn't done it well enough to warrant keeping his job when we have an option who is better in every conceivable fashion right now. It's just tough luck.

This never stops making absolutely no sense. As hot as Theriot's bat is, Cedeno's is hotter. Lou needs to stone up and sit DeRosa and start Cedeno at SS and Theriot at 2nd for the time being or keep DeRosa in and give Cedeno more starts in CF.

Or Cedeno as SS, Theriot as 2nd, DeRo in Right, and Fuko in Center

Honest question... is Theriot doing anything better than Cedeno right now? Am I just overlooking something?

He's the starter, man. You can't bench the starter.

if we're doing this, then put ronny cedeno in LF, theriot at SS and soriano on the bench. and continue giving reed johnson the lion's share of the playing time in CF.
