I wrote this in last night's game thread but I thought maybe it would be a good idea to discuss it here. Last night's loss was on Lou. Ward is not a RFer. If you have to get him some PT put him at 1st base.

Bruce Miles' take.

Yeah, it looks like they really have already given up on Pie. It's pretty dang ridiculous.

I don't mind putting Ward out in RF for a few games. The difference between Pie and Ward offensively is a huge one. Sometimes the Cubs need that boost offensively and risk the defensive issues that result.

With the Cubs offense rolling like it has been and an emotional Zambrano on the mound, last night was simply not the correct night for it. In fact, I would say that they don't really need to put Ward out there in RF unless there is an injury to 1 of the 4 big hitters (Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Fukduome). If one of those players gets hurt, then maybe the Cubs will be struggling enough offensively to take a risk and put Ward out there.

So what should this club be doing to avoid the dreaded "winning streak followed by a losing streak" rut that has seemed to happen regularly the past couple years?

I've got a bad feeling about this now.

Meh. I'm not too worried about it. The rest of this weekend doesn't look good, but I think we tell Dusty and the Reds to eat a bag this week at Wrigley and then we get the Pirates again next weekend. Cubs go 5-3 minimum in the next 8 games. Not too bad.

If they've really given up on Pie they need to just send him down. Bring Murton back up who will be a more useful compliment to Fukudome when he needs to rest.

Murton isn't really a RF but Ward REALLY isn't a RF.

Pie either needs to play or he needs to go down. He may have nothing to prove against AAA pitching but it'd be better for him to stay sharp against it than to sit on the bench.

Call me crazy but Pie might not make the catch Fukudome dropped and Fukudome might not catch the Burrell double. Ward had a horrible jump (um hello, your first step is supposed to be back, not in), but still it was a very hard hit ball.

I just don't understand why we seem to have such a short rope on Pie? In the first 10 games of the season, he's already won one game with a clutch at bat. There's no question is needs to get better plate discipline, but that isn't going to happen while sitting on the bench. Our offense should be strong enough to allow Pie to grow into his role. He's done it at every step along the way and I don't see why he won't now.

I'm a little suprised Lou is making all these changes so quick, but I suppose it should be expected since he's kind of known for doing that sort of thing.

I'll give it another week, see where we are at. 6-4 isn't too bad for the first 10. I'm kind of worried about these next 2 against Philly though.
