I'm interested in all starters (except Keisler), today no exception. Will take some time, but figuring out whether we have anything in harben, Ashwood, Atkins, or Veal is interesting. Hope we get some good games from some of them.

Question for cal or others: Wellington Castillo came into the season as one of our top prospects, and after having a stellar camp and getting 5 hits in the first two games, while many of the top-ten prospects have had depressing camps/early season results, Castillo had moved into my top-10.

But after two games he's disappeared, and we're stuck with Mark Reed catching for Daytona.

Do we know what happened to Castillo, how serious it was, and if/when he'll be back this season?

Thanks in advance if anybody knows anything.

Nice to see Maestri getting through 5 shutout innings, and starting to put the "can't-pitch-rotation, only relief" viewpoint to sleep.

Castillo's not on the Daytona DL and I haven't seen any mention of him in the Daytona News-Journal. He hasn't played since April 4.

No real shockers. I can't tell if they count rehabbers or not...Dolis was pitching there the other day but isn't on the roster while rehabbers Blackford and Muldowney are on the roster. None of the position player rehabbers are listed (Guyer, Richie, Johnson, etc.).

There have been questions about Larry Suarez' weight problems ever since he signed. If you click here and click on his picture, and click "All," you can see 9 pics of him. It certainly doesn't look like he has such pressing weight concerns (though it's entirely possible these were pics of him at age 16 and he's since gained more weight but I'm guessing most of these pics were from last summer).

He's certainly no Quevedo.

Thanks, cal. Yeah, the fact that they haven't replaced him on the roster with a different catcher probably indicates that it's nothing longterm. Good news.

pretty sure I'll be listening to Nate on the radio tonight. As much fun as sitting out in the 39 degree (33 windchill) Peoria weather sounds tonight, think I'm gonna pass. Am guessing Nate will have the windows closed on the booth tonight - stay warm everyone.

AZ Phil update

Petrick and Blackford continuing their rehab and getting close to leaving Mesa. Hatley, Yohan Gonzalez and Searle also pitched effectively. Vitters was 1/3 with an RBI single and a walk but committed a throwing error.

Arik Hempy is also getting stretched out in a simulated game; Rafael Cova got his visa problems solved and followed Hempy in the simulated game.

And one of ITI or AZ Phil have to be right, no?

Tennessee has exploded. Six runs in four innings as they lead Jacksonville 6-1 after 4. Atkins is pitching well: 4 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 2 K's/1 BB, 5 GO's/5 FO's. Salas is 2/2 with a double and Simokaitis is 1/2 with a double. Colvin is 1/3 with a run scored and a strikeout.

Oneri was in the booth for part of the Tennessee game but I didn't hear anything too interesting (wasn't paying complete attention to the game though). He said he'd be back in the broadcast booth for part of game two.

Peoria rained out; bunch of MWL games snowed out.

Oh snap, Doug Deeds pinch hit for Atkins and smacked a home run out of the whole stadium in his first plate appearance in the Cubs system. Monster shot.

Atkins' final line: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB.

Smokies win it 8-1.

He strikes me as a future streak hitter. If he can be a little more like Soriano and a little less like Jacque Jones, that'd be welcome.

Argh, Veal was fine the first 2 innings and then imploded in the third. 8 K to 7 BB in 6.1 innings this season. :|

Gallagher needs to get that pitch count down but another good start. Love the 3 walks, Murton.

Harben needs to cut down the walks (guess that's not surprising since he's coming back from TJS) but he's been solid.

Craig, Castillo is back in the Daytona lineup but he's DHing.

So Deeds is in Tennessee? I know he's somewhat blocked in Iowa, but does that pretty much tell us exactly how useful they ultimately view him to be, as a bench guy, trade piece, or otherwise?

All the minor league teams win, including two doubleheader sweeps. :o

Murton went 1 for 2 with 5 walks in the doubleheader.

Windows are never closed!!! I'm sure I'll need the stocking cap and gloves again Sunday though...for 14 innings!

We'll be getting back to the 70s by mid-week! Keep up the hope!
