As the Cardinals began batting practice, Houston pitcher Brandon Backe yelled at Pujols from the Astros’ side of the diamond. Manager Cecil Cooper had to get between the two players, and teammates ushered Backe from the field. The Astros clubhouse closed immediately after Backe left the field.

The MLB.com version is a bit different.

Pujols and Backe exchanged words as the Astros exited the field during batting practice prior to the series finale at Minute Maid Park. Pujols stopped Backe as the two crossed paths near first base, and, according to Backe, expressed his dissatisfaction that Backe "kept pressing on" about an incident that happened during Tuesday's game.

"[i was] coming off the field and he approached me," Backe said. "I don't know. It's apparent that we don't like each other. That's OK. There's plenty of people I don't like in this game. It doesn't matter. It's baseball. It's the way it goes. The competition between he and I just escalated and it's OK. It's no big deal. This is what makes it fun."

The bad blood between Backe and Pujols may go back several years. According to a source close to the team, Pujols took issue with the premature jubilation spilling over in the Astros' dugout during Game 5 of the NLCS. Pujols won the game for the Cardinals with a three-run homer off Brad Lidge and later commented that Backe was "already popping the champagne" before the Astros had sealed the win.

I have a hard time picturing Backe seriously injuring Pujols.

(unless Pujols falls on the way to the mound and breaks his hip)

Don't worry, after that happens, his AARP Insurances kicks, and he would be ready to play again by 40.

So he'd only be out a couple weeks?

Shades of Ventura v Ryan in terms of disparity of badassedness.

I read that as baldness.

Odd, I read that as oldness.

Potato, potahto I guess. :)

So we're not going to get into the douchebaggery of Pujols going after Towles ankles? I didn't have a problem with Pujols trying to make a point, but don't go after a guys knees or ankles, it's just dirty and uncalled for.

It's what LaRussa teaches... 'nuff said.

Of course, I didn't see the play, so I really don't have an opinion on it. I know that I generally don't like LaRussa and all his excuses, double standards, and general whiny-ness.

You always take out the catcher sliding into home plate if you think there might be a play at the plate. How do you think Pete Rose earned the nickname 'Charlie Hustle'?

=D>

Not even the incomparable Albert "Clark Kent/Superman" Pujols could return to the field after a couple of weeks after breaking a hip, at his "AGE."

I was watching the game and even the Cardinals announcer said it was a dirty play. Towles was standing in front of the plate, and Pujols almost missed the plate since he slide at Towles.

Uh, yeah, Towles was at least a foot, maybe two, in front of the plate and Pujols had to go well out of his way to get to him. And way to completely miss the point. Rose's hit on the catcher in that all star game was totally clean and he hit him in the chest, he didn't go for his ankles.
