Knoxville News-Sentinel"]Berg doesn't look anything like the pitcher who was 7-7 and had a 4.95 earned-run average and averaged 4.4 walks per nine innings for Tennessee last season. But he has only two losses to show for the improvement.

"Berg was outstanding," Bailey said. "I saw him a couple of years ago and he has come a long way. He is holding runners and gets a lot of ground-ball outs. His composure is better. That was the brightest spot we had tonight."

The 23-year-old sinkerballer, who was acquired by the Chicago Cubs from the New York Yankees in 2005 for former major league outfielder Matt Lawton, has walked two in two starts spanning 102.3 innings.

A double by Jacksonville's Juan De Jesus Jr., who was 3-for-5, and an error put Berg in deep trouble in the sixth. The next three Suns failed to get the ball out of the infield and he escaped unscathed.

Last season Berg would have been taking a shower instead of a seat in the dugout.

"He is turning into a man and that's what it takes to be able to pitch in the big leagues," Bailey said.

Daytona News-Journal"]The Cubs (4-3) also got four strong innings of relief from winning pitcher Marco Carrillo (1-0), who fanned five batters and yielded just one run on two hits. Carrillo didn't issue any walks, which is where starting pitcher Jose Ceda had trouble. Ceda walked four and both runs he allowed reached base on free passes.

"For the most part (Carrillo) was a lot more settled down," Davis said. "He was a lot more like the Carrillo that we're used to seeing. We just have to pitch ahead and not walk guys."

Just for Raisin's sake, I'll put my 2 cents in on DER's performance. He definitely looked the strongest of our starting pitchers that I've seen so far. He was consistently 90-92. I only stayed through the 3rd inning of the game he pitched (it was *cold* and I gave up trying to handle it), but it did seem like the hitters started picking up his fastball pretty early, but when they made contact, it was generally handle-able. I hope his dominance continues the 2nd and 3rd time he sees these teams!

i remember when we used to have "happy pawelek day"
Now "Happy Pawelek Day" would just be when (or if) he finally makes it to a full-season level.

No. He made 2 relief appearances at the beginning of last season with Peoria.

can you imagine if we would have drafted Rasmus, ellsbury or bucholz, instead?

And none of them would have reached the majors with the Cubs. Chances are, all three would prolly be at AA.....
