The Diamondbacks are close to signing OF Chris Young to a long-term contract.

Young's new deal is thought to be similar to the six-year, $31 million deal Troy Tulowitzki got. It would keep him under Arizona's control through his first season of free agency. Young has proven he's a Gold Glove-caliber fielder, and while his average should improve, has shown he's a legitimate 30-30 threat.

I would say this would be a smart move by them. As many young high quality guys as they got, avoiding the entire arbitration process would be a good thing.

Seems like everyone is locking up their young talent way too early. The guy had a near 30-30 year. I like his ability, but man did his other numbers suck last year. Is it me, or am I the only one who thinks these teams should at least wait another year or two so they can have them on the cheap cheap before arby kicks in before throwing out these big contracts after one good year (which aside from the HR and SB, sucked)?

It certainly is a gamble, and a lot of it is determined by their agent. However the way arbitration is going, and the way contracts are going teams can save a lot of money by doing this.

The Diamondbacks will officially announce a six-year deal for Chris Young on Tuesday.

The deal will buy out Young's first year of free agency, and there's expected to be an option for 2014. The total package should be worth about $30 million.

Also, unlike Soriano, Young's low obp was more a function of his low batting average than terrible plate discipline. Young's career minor league IsoD was close to .100. I think as he settles into the major leagues he will be at least a .260/.340 type guy, with power, speed and defense.
