Holliman struggling with his control in his AAA debut: in 2 IP, he already has 4 walks (and 3 strikeouts). Iowa tied at 2 and batting in the 2nd.

Daytona up 2-0 in the 5th. Harben with 4 scoreless so far.

Peoria and Beloit scoreless after 2. Ashwood: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB. Marquez Smith is 1/18 to start the season. Josh Donaldson is 1/14.

Peoria can't field worth a lick. 8 errors yesterday and already five today through 4 innings. Ashwood only pitched 3 and a third allowing 2 hits, 1 run, 0 earned, and striking out 1. Not sure why he didn't make it out of the 4th. And Peoria doesn't have a hit through 4 innings.

Downs just gave up 3 runs to Vero Beach without recording an out in the 6th. Daytona now trails that game 3-2 in the 7th.

Iowa up 7-2 in the 4th. Holliman: 3 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 K's/5 BB's (yuck). No EPatt or Murton in the lineup tonight (double yuck).

Tennessee is scoreless in the 5th. Watson: 4 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 K/0 BB's. Reynolds and Muyco have the only hits for the Smokies.

You know your farm system may be in trouble when the daily minor league report includes just about nobody worth a damn.

But at least now I am updated on the doings of Ashwood, Muyco, Reynolds, Downs, Marquez Smith, Holliman.

donaldson is having a slow start to the year. tony thomas is really raking though. i like him, but i know scouts aren't real big on his tools.

The power hasn't shown itself yet this year and apparently his D leaves something to be desired.

However, I'd be fine if he turned into a Todd Walker type of 2B.

Daytona comes from behind and defeats Vero Beach 4-3 in 10. Decent start for Harben: 5 IP, 3 hits, 0 ER's, 3 K's/4 BB's. Dumas Garcia earns the win with two scoreless innings and Casey Lambert gets his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 10th inning. Adduci went 2/3 with two RBI's and a run scored. Thomas, Wyatt, and Carter each had two singles as well. No XBH's for Daytona tonight.

Peoria gave up 6 runs in the 9th and lost 8-0. The Chiefs have now committed 15 (yes, 15) errors in the last two games. Only two of the eight runs were earned. The offense wasn't much better as they only managed two hits; one from Dylan Johnston and one from Cliff Andersen.

Iowa up 8-4 in the 8th. Holliman only went 3 innings giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, striking out 4 and walking 5. Geoff Jones gave up two runs in 3 innings. Cotts has struck out 3, walked none, and has allowed a hit in two innings of work. EPatt came in to pinch hit and remained in the game at 2B. He's 1/2 at the dish with a double. Jake Fox has a double and two RBI's.

Tennessee up 1-0 in the 8th. Great start for Watson: 6 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 2 K's/0 BB's. Kyle Reynolds is 2/3.

Not sure where this comes from since he threw out 4 runners tonight....

and as for one of the earlier posts, Ashwood only threw what he did because of pitch counts. 68 pitches in 3 + innings. he had three at-bats over 10 plus pitches due to foul ball after foul ball...

Ah, I was talking about Tony Thomas in that post.

Des Moines Register"]"I was a little amped up, but I've got it out of my system," Holliman said. "I had quite a bit of adrenaline going."

In three innings, two shy of qualifying for the win, Holliman allowed two runs, struck out four and walked five.

All the runs against him came during an eight-batter, first inning.

"That wasn't typical Holliman," Iowa manager Pat Listach said. "He throws more strikes than that."

"I felt good, maybe a little too good because I was overthrowing a little," Holliman said. "Now I can settle in and work towards my next start."

Peoria Journal-Star"]One reason Peoria was still in the game was the pitching from starter Zach Ashwood, who lasted just 31/3 innings and was hung with the tough loss after allowing just two hits and striking out a batter.

"He probably could have kept pitching but we had to get him out of there," Sandberg said. "It's just an April thing where the first start and his pitch count got the best of him. They were putting some balls in play and the defense wasn't making the plays behind him."

But perhaps the biggest reason Peoria was still in the game was the defense of catcher Josh Donaldson.

He alertly tagged Joe Benson to start the game. Donaldson backed up first when a wide throw let Benson reach, but the center fielder took two steps into fair ground and was tagged out.

Donaldson also threw out all three would-be basestealers in the first five innings and picked off Garrett Olson at first after the Beloit shortstop reached on, of course, an error.

"That's one of the bright spots tonight," Sandberg said.

...

"We just have to clean it up a little bit, that all starts with a little more concentration on detail," Sandberg said. "We have to improve on the fundamentals of throwing the ball and catching the ball."

aside from Donaldson's heads-up play tagging out Benson, last night's game was *awful* to sit through. The cold wasn't even the big deal, but rather the defense that just was abyssmal. When the fact that the Homer the mascot uniform was new was the highlight, it hasn't been a good game. I left after the bottom of the 8th (couldn't stand it any longer) - so didn't even witness the 9th. Bleck.

It was good to see Donaldson throw a bunch of guys out, though. He's got a great arm. Noticed Fleita and Dernier in the crowd (there may have been others and just missed them). We need a 1st baseman who can pick a ball out of the dirt, please.

OK - end of rant. Look for better things soon. Really soon.

A team with Ryne Sandberg as the manager has 15 errors in 2 games? I'd guess Peoria's gonna have some real fun "batting practices".

During the opening day rain delay, they played parts of a Cubs documentary.

They interviewed some guy, about Sandberg.

Some guy: He was one of those players who was good, but he couldn't tell you why he was good.

You're Peoria Chiefs manager, everybody.

The minor leagues are supposed to be about the young kids. Helping the kids become major leaguers. He's only out for himself, just like he always was. All he ever cared about was winning - winning - winning.

A real LOSER off-the-field too. No wonder he's headed for a second DIVORCE. LOUSY family man.

The Hall of Fame does not make you a good person. He let it go to his head. I hope to GOD he never ever manages the CUBS. I'll become a Whie Sox fan.

IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!

This is one of my all-time favorite running jokes.
