Gallagher, Atkins, and Samardzija all in the same day. Not too shabby.

I'm more excited to see Russell pitch than Atkins.

nice effort be sean. hopefully he can keep improving his command.

And hopefully, someone will want to take Marquis and/or Dempster off our hands. Marshall & Gallagher are better options.

Can someone talk to me about Marwin Gonzalez? 19 year old switch hitting shortstops in the MWL are a good thing, and he's off to a good start after a strong showing in Short Season ball. The only thing the search function provided was Ryno12 hearing that he probably wouldn't stick at SS. Is that true, and are there any other reports on his defense?

Just wanted to add my thoughts from what I saw today. Sean was a little amped up in the 1st two innings as pitches were up. The last three innings he was ahead of the hitters and throwing all his pitches for strikes. Sean had a nasty change today that had lots of movement and CB was looking good. His velocity in the first and second innings was 90/92 and last three was 93/94. I heard from a member of the I-Cub staff that their gun is 2mph slow so Sean was brining it pretty good. Sean had a couple of hitters that really made him work and throw lots of pitches in their at bats. He also gave up both hits on 0-2 counts which is a no-no, the homerun was a FB that was grooved down the plate and the second was about a foot outside that the hitter stuck his bat out and dropped it into RF. I also have to say that I have heard many comments about what great shape Sean is in and I have to agree. I remember watching him in the MWL and the past couple of years and what a difference it has made. He has busted his butt over the past couple of offseasons and its starting to pay dividends.

I also have to say that after just watching the first two games that the I-Cubs are going to have a great pitching staff and that the bats will come around.

Matt Camp breaks the Tennessee shutout with a two run homer. Atkins has 5 Ks through 3.

James Russell having a decent outing for Daytona, having pitched 4 IP with 5 H, 1 K, and 1 HR thus far.

tony thomas is 2-2 with a walk so far. he's really raking to start the year. if the cubs have thrown in the towel on patterson, thomas could be the one to take over 2b after derosa's contract is up.

Russell: 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 K/1 BB

Siegfried: 5 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K/2 BB

And Acosta did well in his debut to start the season. Not a bad start to the season (sans strikeout rates) for the Cubs' top 3 starting pitchers drafted last year.

Gotta start getting more ground balls or strikeouts, Samardzija. But I'll take the 1.80 ERA.

Definitely agreed on the too many flyouts, but I am a little more encouraged to see that out of the 9 flyouts, 4 of them were actually popups to the infielders. Add to that no extra base hits and I'm pretty happy with the first outing.

But I definitely agree with you that I'm worried about his sustained success with few ground balls and few strikeouts. There are very few pitchers that can be successful from year to year doing that.

The Chiefs loss was disappointing tonight - 8 errors in a single game must have just looked like the keystone cops. Hope that they clean that up soon. On the bright side, not a single one of those errors came from Dylan Johnston, so maybe that move to the outfield was the way to go.

The good news, I suppose, is that despite a really horrid loss by the Peoria Rivermen, we scored 2 great jerseys - it was Chiefs night and the jerseys were better looking than most I've seen.

So... if it takes place across the two games of a dh, is it a bi-cycle or something?
