Something tells me that Ryan contacted Robert Johnson's kin and found out how to contact an old family friend...

Ryan Dempster is going to be a big surprise for the Cubs this year. His stuff looked very impressive, and his hard work was evident today. EVERYTHING was moving.

His stuff has never been the issue; Dempster has always had nasty movement on all his pitches. It's always been about control and command... and color me skeptical that Dempster has finally learned to put his pitches where he wants.

You're point is important to the discussion. Demspter needs to be tested against a patient team, and that hasn't happened yet. He had stuff equally as nasty in his former starter's role life as well.

Guys like Dempster and Marmol, with stuff that sharp, can go stretches earning the oft-abused "unhittable" tag. They can also walk 4 guys in an inning on an off-day.

Dempster in the rotation is going to yield decisions. He isn't Marquis, meaning a guy whose ERA accurately defines an average number of runs per performance. Dempster is the sort that gives up 1 or 8.

Dempster threw a gem yesterday and Marmol and Wood threw two meatballs to ruin it. Woody looked good after that horrible pitch though.

No shame in Wood's outing. Giving up a solo shot to a good fastball hitter like Bay will happen from time to time...the important thing is that he immediately stopped the bleeding and made the next three batters look like chumps and kept the Cubs in it.

Exactly. He made one mistake and a good fastball hitter picked on it.

This may have been discussed in the game thread, but I kind of thought that Pie might have had a shot of catching that solo shot by Bay. It looked like he gave up on it to play the ball off the wall when in reality it barely cleared the wall. I could be wrong, since I only saw it on a small screen tv in a bar.

I was as worried about Dempster as anyone. However, he really impressed me in person last week vs. Mil., and it's too bad he's not 2-0. It was good to see Wood shut them down after the HR I was worried he was loose focus after that.

Geez guys, I like him too, but it's way too early to start saying that.

It's not as if Bay 'crashed' it. In fact, I distintively remember hearing that the commentators were surprise that the ball got out. Otherwise, it was definately a good outing--excluding one pitch---for Wood.

It surprised me, too. DeRosa hit a ball earlier that was hit seemingly harder.
