Depending on the money, this could be two very bad longterm contracts for outfielders by a very smart GM in Ricciardi.

6 years is a bit much but he is good.

yeah they're really going to regret having him under their control throughout his prime. lord knows years 26-31 are when players start to really suck and make you regret signing them.

i'll give you a break though, i'm sure you just read others opinions on contracts and tried making your own conclusions.

wow ok. angry/bitter much?

his MORP for those 6 years is $58,500,000, so the contract would be pretty fair. he doesn't walk enough for my tastes, but he's a plus defender and maybe he can turn a few more of those doubles into homers. if vernon wells could ever show some consistency from year to year, this would be a great OF tandem, but it's looking like vernon is following the jermaine dye career path.

A problem that Rios has is that he seems to refuse to use the whole field. I know that I have seen a few charts that clearly show this. All 24 of his home runs last season were pulled. Someone posted a website that showed where players were hitting there home runs to a couple of months ago. I can't remember the site, but I know that nothing went right of center. Of his 24, he hit 18 in the first half and only 6 in the second. There was also a chart showing where he was being pitched. In the first half, he saw a fair number of pitches inside and of course, teams figured him out and started going away. I saw him in Cleveland last year and during batting practice, he hit bomb after bomb, but not once did he try to do anything but smash the ball down the lf line. He seems to be able to continue to hit for avg. even though teams have figured out his swing tendencies. If this guy could start using the whole field he could become a perennial mvp candidate.

It's done:

Blue Jays signed outfielder Alex Rios to a six-year, $64 million contract extension through 2012.

No mention was made of the reported option for a seventh year. Rios was probably going to get about $18 million for his final two years of arbitration, so the Jays are buying out his first four years of free agency for about $46 million. It's a big commitment to a player who doesn't qualify as a superstar, but Rios is a well above average regular and he's likely to age well.
