You people are too funny.

Bruce came into spring training having to win a job. He proceed to post a sub 600 OPS. He'll go to AAA, get some more seaso ning, and be up by years end.

No big deal.

What's funny is that you think that a player should have to win or lose a job during ST.

If he is 20 years old and for some reason the Reds think he needs more seasoning, I suppose it's fine because he's so young. Now if they throw Vitters down, then they have problems. It's far better for the Bruce to not have Dusty around him anyways.

Ooohhh...good point...especially if the thing that Bruce needs to work on most is his patience. Dusty would ruin him and his approach for the rest of his career considering he's so young.

If you want to play for me, young man, you'd better not be clogging up the bases. If the pitcher throws you anything remotely close to the plate, you put your best swing on it! Only take pitches that land in front of home plate or are over your head.

Opps...not Vitters but the other good young guy the Reds have!

As posted in BD, Dusty has named Corey Patterson his starting centerfielder and leadoff man. He said he has a "plan", and that we should just let the "plan" do the talking, instead of asking questions about it. Or something like that.

Excellent! =D>

His plan appears to be swing and swing often. Walks clog the bases, dude.

:good:

Actually now that I read the thread and link in BBD, it just has a quote from Bruce about how he knew he wasn't going to make it when Corey was signed, so that thread was a little premature, even if it appears that's the way Dusty is leading.

I heart Dusty.

I posted this in BD too, but where does it say that CPatt is leading off?

Whoever is playing CF is going to leadoff. I'll be shocked if Patterson isn't in CF and leading off come March 31st.

I would have sent Bruce down no matter that he's already one of the better hitters on the Reds.

That doesn't excuse having a competition over 2 weeks to determine a starter. Or leading Corey Patterson off AGAIN. Or any of the other stupid crap Dusty will pull that will set the Reds back.

If I didn't have to rush out of work yesterday, I was going to post the exact same thing. But I was gonna add to the end.

If they wait til mid-May or so it'll save them about $10m in the long run. Why are we laughing so much about this? When Longoria gets sent down that's just Maddon being Maddon too?

No, that will just be the Rays being the Rays (cheap as usual and making a financial decision over a baseball decision). It really is a very similar situation. History says Dusty will send down young players so he can start vets. And in this case he did it again. History says the Rays will send down young players that are good enough to make the team so they can delay starting their arbritration / FA clock and save money long term. And in this case they are going to do it again. Fans of neither team should be surprised by the decisions because it is consistent with the track record of Dusty and the Rays.

There's a distinct difference between cheapness and being financially responsible. A team like the Rays can't be throwing away that much money, unless doing so greatly increases their chances for the playoffs this year, but that remains a longshot.

Sure, and the Rays qualify as cheap. They keep stockpiling their talent in the minors and not starting the arbritration clock using the "we aren't ready to make the playoffs yet" theory you support. Guess what, with the Red Sox and Yankees in their division you are going to be waiting a long time for a big opening to make the playoffs. In the meantime you alienate your already weak fan base by not putting the best team on the field. It is a losing philosophy.
