According to multiple clubhouse sources, the Red Sox will be holding a players-only meeting later this morning concerning the issue regarding the coaches potentially not being paid the $40,000 allocated the players. The sources indicated that the players will be issuing a mandate to Major League Baseball that if the coaches aren’t paid, then the team will not be getting on the plane later today for Japan.

This could get interesting...

It might help the Rays quest to win the AL East if the Red Sox start 0-2

But I'm pretty sure the networks might want a refund if the games aren't played.

Networks? What could they be paying for games that will air at 3am?

the whole thing is terribly silly...the season is starting for the A's and the red sox...but then they come back and each play another exhibition series...why in the world couldn't they have started this thing in japan on the 31st...there is still a week to go in spring training...

flat out silly

Red Sox fans alone will get them decent enough ratings. Then you add in the Bay Area and interested baseball fans across the country. That alone will get you better ratings than the average Friday evening NBA game. Then you include the Japanese market, especially excited for a Dice-K start in his homeland, and there is of course a lot of money on the line.

The way they have it set up now, they play over there, then get back to the states with a week to transition back, and then start up again with real games.

Silly would be expecting these teams to spend a week in Japan, play on the 31st, and then a day or two later be playing again 12 time zones away.

Good for them.

No way MLB doesn't give in on this one though. This would be a PR disaster for them in Japan and the US. Theres tons of money at stake here, no way Selig stands tough.

Put yourself in the players' shoes and ask yourself if going to Japan a week early, and then having a week at the backend to get reacclimated (work through jetlag, reset your body clock, transition back from Florida/Arizona to your in-season home, etc.) would or would not be preferrable to spending an extra week away from home at ST, and then jamming this Japan trip right up against the start of the season.

Seems like an easy call to me.

You are seriously that out of touch with reality?

Play on the 31st, flay around the globe, and play a fresh team 2 days later.

Wow.

I love how Redsox.com spun this:

After more than an hour delay due to an apparent misunderstanding over whether the Boston coaching and support staff will receive stipends for making the trip to Tokyo, the Sox are playing the Blue Jays this afternoon.

Wow, it must be pretty sweet to be able to demand such compensation for going on a business trip. Insane. Didn't feel the least bit of sympathy for the coaches.

You're missing the point. The amount is irrelevant. They were told that they were getting paid for this trip, then after they agreed to go, the payment offer was rescinded. They have every right to demand compensation for the trip if a number was agreed upon. The coaches and players were in the right here and the league should be embarassed for bargaining in bad faith.

The coaches understood they were getting the $40K, until someone came along and told them that no, they aren't.

Sounds exactly like a misunderstanding to me.

According to various media reports, the players and coaches were all offered compensation for the trip. Then MLB or whoever apparently reneged -- leading to the player threats. I don't necessarily think they deserve $40k for a week in Japan, but if that's what they were promised... well, that changes things.

Its fine to take an incorrect stance, so congrats. I, MLB, and nearly any reasonable person will gladly sit on the opposite side of the fence as you.
