TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Billy Crystal will get to “look mahvelous” in pinstripes.

The actor will sign a one-day, minor league contract with the New York Yankees and play in Thursday’s exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Crystal, an avid Yankees fan, will work out with the team on Wednesday and will wear uniform No. 60 for the game—to be played one day before his 60th birthday. The Yankees said Monday they have the approval of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

“I’ve been waiting 50 years for this call,” Crystal said in a statement released by the team. “I’m overwhelmed by the generosity of the Yankees and commissioner Selig. I know this’ll be tougher than the Broadway Softball League, but I’m looking forward to helping the younger players, which by the way is all of them. Oops, I have to go, Scott Boras is on the phone.”

Rammy, you beat me to the punch. I was already to post this until I noticed you beat me to the punch. I think the Cubs should nfollow suit and sign Bill Murray to a minor league contact. Other than Murray and Tom Dressen, what other comedians are Cub fans? Isn't Jim Belushi also a Cub fan?

jim belushi is hardly a comedian, you have to be somewhat funny for that and he isn't.

jeff garlin on the other hand, he's funny and i think it would hilarious to watch him run.

Agreed, Belushi is more of an actor but like his brother, I think he started at Second City and aspired to be a comedian. Anyway, he's a huge Cub fan. I don't think I'm familiar with Jeff Garlin though.

Well if he plays catcher I hope nobody runs him . . . isn't John Cusack a big Cubs fan?

He lost that status when he switched to the Pale Hose during their World Series run.

I hope Bill Murray would have more class than to participate in a stupid stunt; the other two hacks, would jump at the chance.

What? Is this the NoFunLeague? I think it's funny and should be some good press.

Good press, did ESPN forget to talk about the Yankees for an hour, so they needed an attention grabbing stunt.

I wouldn't classify it as funny, sort of an "oh, that's so cute" moment instead. But hey, if that's your thing, laugh away.

Have fun storming the castle Billy.

He's going to hold quite a grudge when King George's son fires him.

So it would be good press if it weren't the Yankees? I meant it would be good for baseball as a whole.

Do you feel the same way about Pro/Ams on the PGA. I don't even like watching golf, but sometimes the highlights of the Comedians are funny.

If you're going to do this, do it for some kid who is less fortunate. Allowing some has-been star to massage his ego for the cameras when he can't get a movie role anymore is stupid and serves no greater purpose.

I don't see where this stunt benefits baseball.

what Soul said in his post hits the nail on the head.

Doing it for a kid would be cool too.

i am surprised that he was able to find time to do this, what with all the movies he's acting in these days.

Was Analyze That the last movie he was in? i can't think of any acting he's done recently.

yes, besides a cameo in the end credits of Cars and a few voiceovers.
