Chris Singleton is going to ESPN's Baseball Tonight? Just when you thought they couldn't get any dumber in Bristol.

I loved listening to stoney. He mostly talked baseball and actually had a clue. Sure, he had a big mouth...

Good for him. Stoney is an excellent baseball announcer and will certainly add to the broadcasts. But Ed Farmer is just terrible as a play by play guy, with his monotone style. He's a typical Reinsdorf hire-a loyal, non-descript employee. Didn't he ever learn that a good announcing team(Harry and Jimmy) can sell tickets and create excitement? Farmer-Harrelson-Jackson-pretty bad.

Steve Stone was the best announcer the Cubs ever had.

That's funny.

he wasn't the best, but i liked him

As did I. I think Bob has grown on me as well and I'm pretty happy he's the color guy in the booth.

I'd have trashed the Cubs too if they fired me just to appease some of their crybaby players.

Stoney was the man. I never understood the sudden hate on him.

You haven't heard a baseball game called unless you heard one by Harry and Steve. Those were good times.

Some people drink a little too much kool aid and can't form opinions that go against the grain. I never understood the hate either. So what the guy could predict what was going to happen? Why is that a big deal? It's better than two guys in the booth joking about a player's name for an entire inning.

Some people prefer this kind of Cubs color man:

"Patrick, I was in the bathroom for the past two innings, what happened?"

"When I played as a third base...man, the ball was square."

"I wasn't paying attention, let's see what the replay shows."

"Here's a fax..'I love you, Ronnie and the other guy you're with."

"Who is that in right field for the Cubs? I think he's lefthanded?"

Further proof that Stoney is best, not required.

So what the guy could predict what was going to happen?

This is a myth.

Half the time he was wrong. Course....Stoney people dont like to mention that.

Sort of like people who tell you how they "won" at the casino.

He was good with Harry. Way overrated by some.

And apaprently not the baseball genius he is made out to be by a lot of people since the only job he could get was as a radio guy with the blanking WHITE SOX!

It will be fun to listen in and hear the two egomanics fighting for the microphone....I predict some awkward moments! Much like their TV booth! Very entertaining!

He said best announcer, not color man.

Harry & Brick, in their own ways, were very good at what they did.

As for color guys, Stoney was good, probably the best since Lou Boudreau in the early to mid 70s with Brickhouse; which is not saying much since Joe Carter also filled in that role.

Steve Stone is a very solid color guy who has been ridiculously overrated to the level of some kind of guru by a huge chunk of the Cubs' fan base. As such, many other fans have gone to equally ridiculous levels in undervaluing his contributions to a broadcast and general baseball knowledge.

I think its fair to say he's one of the better color analysts in baseball with an ego that is far too large. That said, I'm very happy with Bob Brenly, who I think is an equal if not better color analyst with somewhat more relevant non-baseball anectdotes to add to a broadcast. As a young(er) listener, this is much appreciated.

Agree with this part

Bob Brenly is a bore. Since Len Kasper is so low key it would be much better to have someone *like* Steve Stone to liven things up.

I actually like Harrelson so I'm in the minority especially for Cubs fans. I think their styles and opinions about the game will be different enough to make it enjoyable.

As much heat as Hawk takes for his goofy sayings, he does talk about more advanced areas of the game compared to someone like Brenly.
