If Donald Trump owned a team, Trump Field would be OK. Make sense?

If Trump owned THE CUBS, you'd be OK with him changing it to Trump Field?

Because, if that's the case, then I understand this crazy (non-)issue even less.

No. It has already been named Wrigley Field and has been that way for damn near a century. It should always remain Wrigley Field.

Nah, they should have never changed it from Weegham Park.

so basically you are saying that you want to get drunk in the bleachers and watch the cubs be losers forever? because there's no way this team can be competitive without renaming the ballpark, i mean there are only 25 other franchises with payrolls as low as the cubs!!!

I think the funniest thing about people who want them to sell naming rights (or who don't care if they do) is that they think the extra revenue is actually going to go towards the payroll.

The Wrigleys are hardly a family baseball should pay tribute to.

why not?

PK was a nut, but WW Jr won plenty of pennants, was the first to recognize the genius of Veeck and was responsible for turning a dinky Federal League park into one of the most enduring symbols of sport

oh never mind, I forgot that you hate the ballpark. we'd be better off if the Cubs and Bears had moved into a dome together back in '72

Hey, if you ask me, Wrigley is a terrible name. It may have originally been a tribute to the "colorful" William Wrigley Jr., but PK Wrigley was in charge far longer and is tied to the Cubs far more than William, anyway. Why do we want to pay tribute to that racist old coot who did nothing but hold back the Cubs and baseball?

(tongue planted firmly in cheek)

I do? I may despise trips to the bathroom there, and recognize that at some point it is going to have to come down (or at least be rebuilt) in the name of safety and progress. But I hardly hate Wrigley Field.

LOL YEA!!! It's not like the Cubs have increased payroll the last few years or anything ZOMG evil Tribune lining their pockets!

Come on, seriously.

even if you don't like the original person/people for whom the venue was named, nobody remembers who they are any more. it's not like the cubs play in hitler park.

I was being sarcastic (if you're replying to me).

Meanwhile the rest of us don't really care about all of this crap, we just want a good baseball team. Its a freaking building - an old, crappy one at that - and you're crying because they might change the name?

history matters to some of us

I'm sure it does. That's not why its funny.

It's funny because it's a ridiculous thing to say.

I just find it hard to believe that this would actually affect anyone's experience. Would anyone be sitting in the stands during a game and think, "Man, this is not as much fun. I'm totally aware of the fact that this is now named 'Home Depot Field.'"

You might be outraged now, but if the naming rights are sold, I think everyone will forget and go back to paying attention to baseball.

No, but every time it's mentioned on TV it will be grating. And having lived in a town that changed a name of a stadium that is about 70 years newer than Wrigley and a lot less revered, it won't be forgotten quickly. People will be grumbling about it 15-20 years from now.

Everybody that's not an official media source will still call it Wrigley though, similar to what happened in Denver with Mile High.

People want to make the distinction that where the Cubs play is named after the man, not the company, as if there is some monumental difference. There isn't. You're just saying that there is because you have this fantasy about baseball in the sunshine, loveable losers, and getting embarrassingly drunk in one of the most expensive ways possible.

No, I'm saying that because there is a difference.

You're sucking the joy out of being a Cubs fan. It's not just about winning.

Frankly, I think it is a travesty. It's like changing the name of Fenway or Yankee Stadium. Baseball is all about history. People won't like it, but it's not that big of deal either.

Winning = joy

Coors and Miller Park are not the same, as they have their product/logos emblazoned on every square inch of the place. Wrigley Field doesn't have a shred of corporate advertising anywhere outside of the name on the marquee, which isn't even the company logo

i will say it yet again, the cubs had the 5th highest payroll in major league baseball last year. renaming the ballpark isn't necessary to be financially competitive; renaming the ballpark doesn't guarantee anything except that the ballpark has a different name.
