I'm not sure what the DBacks would want in return, but Hudson = Roberts. The DBacks have Chris Burke and Augie Ojeda with a hot shot prospect (Bonifacio) as backups. Some serious trade discussion might give us some leverage in the Roberts situation.

D-Backs Hudson could be on move?

Because Orlando Hudson is eligible for free agency after this year, some wonder if this will be his last spring training with the D-Backs - as much as he says he wants to stay and as much as they seem to appreciate his play. Hudson makes no secret where he stands, saying "I want to spend the rest of my career here. I love it here. "Right now, I'm just thinking about getting my team better and about getting to the postseason again - winning the World Series. I'm not thinking about no contract - no way, shape or form," he said. "If I do what I'm supposed to do, everything will be taken care of, anyway." -- East Valley Tribune

Is anyone else absolutely amazed Augie still has a job? I do remember the season when we could hear chants of Augie coming down onto the field. Man, we had to have sucked then!

The sad thing? Augie's numbers the last few years have been barely worse than Theriot's. And Theriot is our starting SS. And he isn't even very good at fielding SS either. So, seriously, what are his redeeming qualities (besides grit)?

Don't jump all over me for saying this, but Ojeda actually did a good job filling in for Hudson last year. I'm sure it was a fluke, but I included him because he is listed on their depth chart.

I don't really have a legitimate reason for it, but I'm skeptical of Hudson's offense, even though he's done it two years now and broke out during his prime years. If he continues to put up even a .350/.425 line he's much better than Roberts because of the defensive advantage.

Baseball Reference has his "most comparable at age 29" as Carlos Guillen

Really? I thought Guillen had a little pop in his bat.

he had almost none at age 29. he hit 19 and 21 HR's at ages 30 and 31

Hudson has 60 career HR through age 29, Guillen had 64

I like Hud. I don't know that he will consistently put up those numbers that Raisin pointed out, but he's a stud defensively. He'd be an upgrade over Derosa because of D. With the bat, if he keeps up recent numbers, he'd be an ok #2 hitter. His career numbers look like a solid 7-hitter.

He's a fan fave in the desert too, from what I understand. The guy just attracts support for his scrappiness no matter what the numbers say. You really can grit your way into the fans' hearts.

his last two years have been much better than "gritty"

How about Hudson?

Why?

When people were supporting going after Roberts, their main defense to the "we already have a second baseman" arugment was about how Roberts is a leadoff hitter and Derosa isn't. Fine. I don't agree with it, but fine.

But now we're discussing other second baseman that don't leadoff, just because the Roberts trade seems unlikely. What the hell is going on? Why don't we focus on upgrading positions that actually need it?

Soriano will lead off

Hudson could bat 2nd

He would presumably come at a lower cost in terms of prospects

If Wrigley23 didn't intend to post the same comment twice above, its about the best unintentional comedy I've read on here in awhile.

That was excellent. Posts at the same time, so I'm guessing unintentional, but brilliant nonetheless.
