Clemens was asking for trouble, and now here we go...

Congress drafts letter reportedly asking feds to look at Clemens

The New York Times reported on Monday that the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has drafted a letter recommending that the Justice Department launch a criminal investigation into whether Clemens committed perjury during his testimony on Feb. 13.

These commitees are the always a misappropriation of funds. That said I'm tired of Roger's annual charade and his arrogance. I would love to see the feds stick it to him.

That phrase may take on a new meaning for Clemens once he's found guilty.

A new link on ESPN.com, with confirmation of the same story... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3267163

It's looking more and more likely that we haven't seen the last of Roger Clemens in pinstripes.

Seems important that it's both Waxman and Davis, the ranking members from both parties, who are jointly requesting the investigation. It was the Republicans who seemed to take Clemens' side during the hearings. Looks like that isn't going to hold for Roger anymore.

There are several people who would have to by lying at this point in order for Roger to be telling the truth. I don't have a clue why some 19 year old kid would lie to support McNamee over his hero Roger, or why Pettitte would deliberately throw him under the bus when he's best friends with him, or for that matter why McNamee would directly put his freedom at risk in order to tell lies about ONLY Roger when he was telling the truth about everyone else.

Logic and common sense would both appear to point to Roger being a stone cold liar. I would be floored if all these other people are lying.

How long before his pants catch fire?

Too bad anything the Feds do to Roger will be quickly undone by a pardon from W the day he leaves office, if not sooner.

im not clear on this issue, but if he has to be convicted first to be pardoned, isn't there a pretty big chance that W is not in office long enough to pardon him?

You can be pardoned prior to being convicted of any crime. See Nixon, Richard. He would just be pardoned for any potential wrongdoing associated with testimony given to Congress, Baseball, etc.

Why do people think that Bush will pardon Clemens?

his dad and clemens are apparently decent friends

I would think a Presidential pardon would seal Roger off from the hall of fame forever, and for sure. The sense of foul play would be so heightened, I can't see how any signficant number of voters would put him in, even many, many years from now. Presumably, Clemens' plan is to cast as much doubt as he possibly can on the charges, so that hopefully in a decade or more people will be willing to put it aside and vote for his numbers. A pardon would certainly ruin that.

Good, so something positive could come from the pardon.

did you miss the hearings a couple of weeks ago? the republicans totally went after mcnamee, while the democrats went after clemens. it's pretty obvious that clemens has a lot of friends on the right (wrong) side of the political spectrum.

it is possible that the justice department will simply decline to investigate clemens. what's going to happen to them if they don't? it's pretty clear that the executive branch and the attorney general are not going to go after clemens.

That's correct. They're too busy trying to go after democratic law makers in the South and West. I have a friend who works for the Justice Department (lower level lawyer) and another who works in the diplomatic corps at the state Department. Both are civil servants. Both are pretty conservative people, much more than many of their colleagues, and both are upset with they way things have been run for the past eight years. It's a big scandal inside of Washington. I don't know if it will boil over after the election or not. Nevertheless, I suspect that nothing will happen to Roger Clemens.
