Patterson had a brief stint with the Cubs in August and was a September call-up. But he was sent back to the minors after arriving late to a game. Minor-league director Oneri Fleita said the incident wouldn't be held against Patterson.

"Golly, everyone makes a mistake," Fleita said. "He paid dearly for it, and it's behind us."

Patterson has spoken to Fleita, Piniella and general manager Jim Hendry to assure them it won't happen again.

Nice to see Patterson really does take it seriously. I think he could be a big help in 2008.

It's foolish to own up to your mistakes. Look how well Roger Clemens is doing by claiming innocence of any wrongdoing. Deny, deny, deny!

I can't understand how his stock took such a dive.

I don't think being late to a game or two hurt his stock as much as moving from 2B to OF did. I'd be surprised if his bat improves enough to make him valuable at a corner outfield position, not to mention he's behind a lot of players on the Cubs in terms of playing time right now.

That makes a lot more sense. I assume it was the defense that finally caught up to him?

Yeah.

we should stretch him out at 2b cause you can never have enough of those.

Nah, no need to. Hendry has shown himself to be quite adept at acquiring mediocre middle IF'rs

Having the 10th or 11th best OPS on his own team last year amongst people with a decent number of at bats didn't help his standing, either.

I was just thinking, wouldn't Patterson make a good platoon partner with Pie against tough lefties... Then I realized Patterson hits LH, too.
