Even if he retires in just a few years. I also wouldn't be surprised if Torii Hunter got a ticket to the Hall of Fame based merely on his reputation. I'm not saying he deserves it, because he obviously doesn't, but the media and writers LOVE Torii Hunter.

I certainly hope not. He's definitely one of the most overrated players of our era.

Wanted to add Ichiro to this list.

Ichiro? No chance. He's only played here for 7 years.

No chance? I think Ichiro is a lock if he retires tomorrow.

I would second this, idk what Mizzou is thinking, Ichiro is a lock.

Why?

He has 1600 hits. That's about half of what it typically takes to get in. He'll probably get in if he plays long enough, but I don't see any possible way he'd get elected if he retired tomorrow.

They'll take into account that he was playing in Japan for a lot of the time. If Ichiro played his entire career in the states he'd probably break the all time hits record and the voters will know that. Yeah, he won't have compiled the gaudy compilation numbers, but I seriously doubt he doesn't make it on the first ballot. When you take into account his defensive reputation and the fact that he's so big internationally, I think he'll make it in fairly easily.

He needs to play three more years to qualify.

Are you serious? In those 7 seasons the guy has 1592 hits (more than anyone has ever had in a 7 year stretch), 782 runs, 272 SB's, 7 straight gold gloves (yes I know).

If he were to end his career now, I think he'd get in because they would (hopefully) take into account how dominant he was in Japan before coming over. I think there is going to have to be some sort of balancing test done with foreign players, starting with Ichiro.

I had no idea. You have to play ten years?

Although I believe the HoF can make exceptions for players whose careers are tragically cut short. For example, if Pujols were to die tomorrow (and no, I'm not wishing that on anybody), he'd probably get in based on how insanely good his numbers have been his first seven years.

I know he's a bad ass. I'm not saying he's not good at baseball. I'm saying that he hasn't played here long enough to get voted in. Look at the players who have been voted in in the past 10, 15, 20 years. All of them had long careers. Being great for 7 years doesn't make you a Hall of Famer.

But this is the MLB Hall of Fame, not the world baseball HOF. I don't think that what he did in Japan will have anything to do with him getting in.

i'd replace andruw jones with torii hunter in this paragraph and agree 100%.

But, Andruw Jones is much better than Torii Hunter.

I disagree. Andruw may be declining/overrated now, but he was legitimately outstanding, perhaps the best ever, in the outfield for a while. He's also not a horrible hitter, already having 368 career homers and a high of 51. He has an OPS+ of 113 for his career, which isn't incredible but isn't horrible. For reference, Brooks Robinson has a career OPS+ of only 104 and is in the HOF.

I dunno, check out their WARP3's. Hunter: 48, Jones: 101.6.

Granted, Jones has played a few more extra seasons, but those seasons aren't going to do squat for making up that kind of difference between them.

oh sorry, i didn't mean to say that andruw jones is overrated. i'm just saying that if he retired today he'd be in the hall of fame, solely on his defensive reputation.

andruw jones is way better than torii hunter.

It should be considered a factor, just like everything else voters look at.

This will all be moot in 5-6 years when he gets to 3000.

It should definitely be considered a factor. I don't know if you can really hold it against Ichiro that he wasn't able to come over to the US a few years earlier. I'm not saying he should be a lock at this stage, but if he can put up three or four more years of 220+ hits and 30+ steals, there's little doubt in my mind he'll be in.
