Why would we want Lofton to split time with Pie? Lofton is a lefty, and brutal against left handed pitching. We need a righty, or at least somebody who can hit lefties to split time with Pie. The only need for Lofton is if the Cubs use Pie to get a top notch SS or pitcher.

Why would you split time with two left-handed hitters at the same position? Why would you assume Cubs management even has Lofton on their radar at this point in time?

The only way Lofton even enters the picture is if Pie gets traded, or the organization has lost confidence in Pie as the future CF for the franchise. Neither is imminent at the moment.

To split time with Pie? Is there any possible way a Lofton signing doesn't make this team at least marginally better?

Because Kenny has put up a .591 against lefties over the past 3 years?

If Pie is traded, I'd like to see Lofton become a Cub, but there's really no place for him if Pie is on the club.

Not to mention that Pie is MUCH better defensively than Lofton. At this point in Lofton's career, he is probably about as valuable as Pie (assuming Pie doesn't have a terrrible offensive year). Like everyone said, he is pretty much useless to the Cubs if they plan on giving Pie a chance.

Besides, if Felix sucks, we could get Lofton at the deadline if he doesn't sign with the Brewers or another contending club.

Yes. He's old and cannot play CF. I don't understand people's interest in Lofton. 2003 was five years ago.

he's still really good at getting on base

because he can play other fields as well and strengthen the bench, not much but he seems to be a clutch hitter in the playoffs. I would like to acquire him in Late July

Putting Lofton in a corner OF spot destroys his value. That is a bad idea.

I would like to acquire him in late July as well. Right after we trade Felix Pie in a package for AJ Burnett, etc. at the deadline.

Or Brian Roberts

As others have said, we already have a left-handed CFer who can hit right handed pitching. The only point of getting another player to split time with Pie in CF is if that player can hit left handed pitching. And that's something Lofton can't do.

And he's not nearly as good defensively. I'd rather just keep Pie.
