Sounds crazy I know.

Ryan Dempster has $5.83M owed to him in 2008.

Jason Marquis has $16.25M owed to him in 2008 and 2009.

Neal Cotts has $800K owed to him in 2008.

TOTAL CUBS OBLIGATION: $22.88M

Vicente Padilla has $24.75M owed to him in 2008 and 2009.

TOTAL RANGERS OBLIGATION: $24.75M

Have the Rangers give the Cubs $1M in cash to make it even-steven and call it a day!

To make this deal work you would have to subtract either Dempster or Marquis and add in a decent minor leauge prospect.

Consider the situation, you have an overpaid Padilla. Obviously Texas wouldn't mind getting out of this...but you are sending them 2 players that are also overpaid, and the combined contracts nearly add up to what they have already have...what incentive is there here for the Rangers?

Consolidate three crappy pitchers into one terrible one?

I don't see a single reason why we'd do this Hoops. Maybe you can elaborate. I hate Marquis as much as the next guy, but I think he will provide more use to the Cubs than Padilla would. Same with Dempster.

Good thought. Subtract Dempster from the deal and add in a prospect. Now Texas would be trading $24.75M in salary and taking back $17.05M. In quick math, the Cubs would be taking on an extra $3.85M each season.

I don't understand the point of the trade either. Padilla isn't that much of a better bet in the rotation than Marquis. Most of the Cubs money in 2008 has already been spent, so the savings for this year won't help very much. There is a serious budget crunch in 09, and this trade would only make that worse. Plus, Dempster could have some positive value in a trade or as a reliever (it's small but it's there), and Cotts is at least depth that can be stashed away in AAA.

Basically the only positive from this trade is 40 man space. I'd much rather have the extra money to spend in 09 than this year though especially when you see how many of the Cubs contracts escalate next year.

Marquis and Cotts for Padilla and Bryd. I would gamble that Padilla can put the booze down and put up better numbers than Marquis did last year. Some teams might see him as a closer option.

I wouldn't like the three for Padilla, but throw Bryd in there to platoon with Pie and then sign Lieber....I'm liking the looks of our team except shortstop. But in that deal you kill two birds with one stone.

some of these trade ideas are hilarious.

hey lets trade dempster marquis and cotts for sabathia!

I've been trying to come up with a Hundley for Karros/Grudzielanek change of scenery scenario trade for some of our current players ever since the offseason started. The idea here was that Texas seems like they'd like to get out from under Padilla's deal similar to the notion that the Cubs may want to get out from under Marquis' deal. Added a few players to better balance the salaries.

I doubt Cleveland is looking to get rid of Sabathia.

So, since my trade is so hilarious, what's your trade scenario to get rid of Marquis? Oh, I forgot, you're only here to criticize others or rubber stamp.

The Rangers would do this deal in a second. Imagine if you had Marquis suck (with a much worse contract) combined with Manny's attitude. They ran out of patience with him last year. There are stories out that there about him ignore pitch calls and just make pitches up just to spite the manager, and getting shellacked in the process. In the interviews I heard (living in Dallas) of Ron Washington and the Rangers brass at the end of the year they were making no secret that they were going going into the offseason looking to dump him off to whoever would be willing to take him. I also think he and Lou would make it about three weeks before one of them had the other in a headlock.

You have contributed a lot, but you're still a relative neophyte. Now I don't think that really matters in light of your input, but many do.

Hoops is a well respected guy around here, maybe enough so that insulting him may make some forget your positive aspects.

oh im a n00b how sweet!

how long youve been here is worthless. you know a lot or you don't. whether or not youve been here for 1 month, 2 years or ten minutes does not mean a thing. it's not as if NSBB is the only place for intelligent cubs/baseball discussion.

Um, that's pretty much what I said.

I just said some do care.

I agree. How long you've been here has no bearing on my comments whatsoever. I would have written the same thing to a poster who's been here 5 minutes or 5 years.

I, probably more than anybody here, have come up with some dud trade ideas in the last 5 years. But the feedback was always constructive. And there would always be a discussion or a counter-proposal. And we were able to build on others' ideas. And that's my point.

You may not like my idea. I accept that. But suggesting that I could have substituted CC Sabathia's name for Vicente Padilla's name is just belittling for no reason. Totally unnecessary. They are 2 very different pitchers in 2 very different scenarios. You know it. I know it.
