I read elsewhere that Offman, when reporting the Fukudome signing, mentioned that a deal for a "prominent AL starting pitcher" was in the works. Can anyone confirm this? And, if so, who is the pitcher? Does the Fukudome signing allow Jim to deal Pie now for pitching? Bedard? Blanton? AJ Burnett?

Why Johan Santana, of course.

I have read unconfirmed speculation that it is Bedard. Roberts and Bedard packaged, though that would likely cost us Hill, Pie, and more.

"unconfirmed speculation"

in other words, an uneducated guess. anyways trading hill in a package for roberts and bedard would be monumentally stupid.

All things equal, I'd prefer Bedard. However, all things are not equal. So, Hill will do.

I'm thinking it's not Bedard at all, but rather Blanton, which would not require Hill. Excellent.

Z, Lilly, Blanton, Hill, pick 'em.

Yeah, I'll take that.

hahaha. One of the first times I've ever laughed at a post of yours Meph. I guess I'm in a good mood on account of finals being over.

If it was an AL free agent starting pitcher I would guess Colon. My first two guesses for trade options are Burnett or Willis. Do we have the chips for a mega deal with Orioles for Bedard ? Mussina might have another good year in him pitching in the NL central. Edited by mdwilla

I hope it's Blanton, I think the cost in players would be more doable and the Cubs could keep Hill and Pie. Something like Sean Gallagher, Tyler Colvin and Eric Patterson might well be to Beane's liking. Two "toolsy" prospects and a promising (though unproven) young starting pitcher.

Zambrano, Lilly, Blanton and Hill, I can dig that, I don't care WHO the 5th starter is in that scenario. Marquis, Dempster, Hart, Mateo....whatever.

"Toolsy" prospects aren't exactly up Beane's alley, IMO. Especially not ones like Colvin, in particular. In fact, they're pretty much the opposite of what he likes (guys who have produced in the minors who don't necessarily have "tools" in the traditional sense).

That said, I hope it is for Blanton.

I could even live with Rusch or Estes as the fifth starter under that scenario. :D

i cannot be the only one that would rather have HILL than BEDARD.

ok this is nsbb... i konw that is false. HILL is the man, not worth Bedard.

I would only part with Hill if it was part of a bigger package than just Bedard. If were talking Bedard/Tejeda for Hill and Marquis. I'm fine with that.

Why do people say Beane won't take toolsy prospects yet the A's were involved in Milledge discussions for years seemingly?

Maybe because in the context of the cubs, our toolsy prospects is just code for "suck".

If we can end up with Bedard without giving up Hill, I would be ecstatic.

Trade: Murton, Patterson and lower prospect for Teahen, Trade Pie, Veal, and Gallagher for Bedard. MOve Fukudome to CF and I think we would be World Series contenders:

Soriano (only because they will bat him leadoff)

Fukudome

Lee

ARam

Teahen

DeRosa

Soto

Theriot

PITCHER

Z, Bedard, Hill, Lilly, Marquis

If the Reds are going to be including Bailey and Hamilton and more in a package to get Bedard, I really don't like the Cubs chances of beating that price.

< suspension of reality >But if by the off chance the Cubs do get Bedard, I'd flip him to Cincy for Bailey, Hamilton, et. al. in a heartbeat! < /sor >

George Ofman doesn't do the news in the morning. Fred Heubner does Scoreboard updates during North's show and when the deal went down Dan Patrick's syndicated show was on.

if Baker has already shaken Bailey's hand, then the damage has already begun.

I heard the same rumor last night. One of the more reputable posters on the Cubs forum at http://www.prosportsdaily.com said he heard from a top scout for the Blue Jays that the Cubs and Jays are closing on a deal that would involve the following:

Cubs Get: AJ Burnett

Jays Get: Marquis, DeRosa, a mid-level prospect (probably Cedeno)

This deal would only happen after the Cubs get an answer from the Orioles regarding Roberts. Personally, I don't see this trade happening because DeRosa is too valuable to the Cubs in terms of a clubhouse presence and versatility. Besides that, the Jays allegedly want DeRo to play 2b...well, if I'm not mistaken, the Jays have Aaron Hill and John McDonald as their middle infielders.
