If it's a one year deal, it's probably a very good move considering Gagne likely can pitch good enough to be a type A reliever (healed from whatever plagued him the second half last season) and the Brewers can get a nice pick out of it.

According to Rotoworld:

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt says Eric Gagne's contract with the Brewers could be worth upwards of $10 million for one year.

GM Doug Melvin confirmed that there was a deal in place. The Brewers didn't want to go to two years, so they'll pay a premium to bring him in for one season. If he turns in a quality year as the team's closer, that means he'd bring back two draft picks next winter, just like Francisco Cordero did. If not, well, then Melvin will know he was right to stick to one year.

$10 million? HAHAHA

Wow, that is more then I expected. But if they weren't going to use that 10 million for anything else and it comes off the books in one year, it still can be a decent move considering the picks they could get.

1 year contracts always look big because there is no risk involved. If the deal doesn't work out it is a relatively small gamble to overpay. If it does work out next year you let him walk and he is a type A FA and you win big.

Their payroll was around $70 million last year. I know it's going up this year, but that's still a huge payout for a reliever who's been injured for the better part of 3 years and looked terrible with Boston.

I don't like it. Jimbo, put down that donut and get busy! I don't think the Brewers are wanting us to repeat again this year.

If the Brewers want to pay 10 million for one year of Gagne, I say let them. If they want to invest 10-15% of their payroll in the empty husk of a once great reliever, I'm all for it.

---certainly paying Gagne that kind of money is a huge risk. He'll never return to the closer he once was and I am glad Hendry didn't shell out that kind of money to sign Gagne...but I got to admit to getting a little nervous when I see Milwaukee making all these moves, in order to improve their bullpen. Tell me that I have nothing to worry about.

Does this effect the pick we get for Kendall?

Kendall was a type B free agent so the Brewers did not lose a draft pick for signing him and nothing that happens in the offseason really changes much with your draft pick. Other signings might push your draft pick down a little bit but nothing is going to move it up.

The price tag of $10M is not a sure thing yet, it easily could be $10M based on incentives for all we know. The thing is I expected 2 years/$16M for Gagne and 1 yr/$10M is probably a better deal. If he is good it means a type A FA and the draft picks easily make up the extra $2M, if he stinks they are out $10M instead of $16M. The only case where it hurts to overpay for a single season is if he is just mediocre but healthy.

The AP is reporting 10 million guaranteed with 1 million in performance incentives on top of that. Gagne could be good, but there's just as good a chance he will be terrible like he was down the stretch. Giving him 10 mil guaranteed is pretty silly, IMO.
