I think I saw this somewhere else so it can be merged if needed:

Nate McLouth-OF-Pirates Dec. 4 - 11:27 am et

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs and Braves are interested in Nate McLouth.

The newspaper speculates that the Cubs could swap a reliever like Carmen Pignatiello or Neal Cotts for McLouth, who would provide some competition for Felie Pie in center field.

The speedy LH obsession continues.

By the way, are you writing for Rotoworld nowadays Prior? You're on top of all the new happenings so far this offseason. :D

Why would it end when no such player has yet to be acquired? I'm not saying I agree with the idea of McLouth, but if you're shopping for tomatos and haven't purchased any, why would you stop?

Because you realize what you need is a nice juicy steak.

Ha, nope. I just like updating efficiently. As a journalism major and a fellow Cub fan, it is my duty.

McLouth had a solid August and September but that's about it. Maybe he figured it out but I doubt it. I will say this though, I'd rather have him backing up Pie over Fuld.

McLouth is left handed and a CF? That doesn't make sense to me with Pie ready to come up.

Invoking the spirit of Jim Hendry ... "this fills our need for a speedy LH bench player."

Anyone get the feeling that this offseason's LH + speed obsession essentially gives birth to the inevitable Piniella & Hendry statement of "what we could use is a good, power-hitting RH batter off the bench" when we approach the '08 trade deadline?

Since when does anything Jim Hendry does make sense?

He has a lot more value than either of those relievers. It would be a good deal even if we don't need him.

That's funny...I see that happening!

Plausible scenario?

Cubs get Hamilton or McLouth to play CF until Colvin is ready.

Cubs use Pie to get Brian Roberts.

I find it really odd how every team seems to covet the other team's top prospects. I don't know that I've ever seen so many top prospects/young talent get rumored into deals in one offseason. LaRoche, Kemp, Kershaw, Ellsbury, Hughes, Lester, Dukes, Delmon Young, Garza, Pie, Murton, Bruce, Bailey, Andrew Miller, Adam Miller, Chase Headley, Kendrick, Adenhart, Rasmus, Hamilton, Milledge, etc.....

I think it was bound to happen when someone like Jose Guillen is getting 36 million dollars.

I wouldn't call him one, which is why I didn't list him. But, I'd bet Hendry likes McLouth more than he likes Pie. And it would only be a matter of time before McLouth was grabbing up most of the at bats in CF.

I doubt that sincerely. Even Hendry would not do that.

No, but Neal Cotts is.

We need a backup CF, whether he's left handed or not, and getting a 26 year old with a $390k salary coming off a .810 OPS season for a spare reliever part (especially after the Ascaino aquisition) would be a pretty nice deal in the current free agent market. Edited by Elrhino
