"We could've taken the avenue of, in our evaluation, go a level down from players we're pursuing and we'd be done," he said. "We chose not to do that. With that comes the possibility of not getting the level down guys if you don't get the level above guys. We think that's the path we have to go."

I like this.

yeah unfortunately hendry considers kaz matsui is considered a "level above" guy, so the good idea of not settling for scrubs is torpedoed by the fact that a scrub was one of the main targets.

I'm still thinking a 3-team deal with the Cubs, Orioles, and Angels might be the way to go.

That'd be nice. Maybe we can swindle Brandon Wood away from the Angels somehow as well

I think that in that deal Wood would end up with the Orioles.

I've posted this twice (with some tweaking), but it's obvious the Orioles would want Pie in a deal from the Cubs. The Cubs aren't going to want to include Pie unless he's replaced. Some have heard Hendry would trade Pie if he could get a player like Figgins. The Angels would like Tejada for third base, hence a three-way deal.

Here's something that I had in mind:

Angels get Tejada

Cubs get Roberts and Figgins

Orioles get Pie, Brandon Wood, Marshall, Ervin Santana, Cedeno, and Murton.

That would be a framework, but other players might need to be involved to make it work. The Orioles might want better pitchers than Marshall and Santana. The Angels may feel they are giving away too much in Figgins, Wood, and Santana. So, some changes likely would need to be made, but the principals of Tejada to the Angels, Figgins and Robers to the Cubs, and Pie and Wood as part of the package to the Orioles could remain the same.

vance,

Not to bubble burst, but who would play RF on that Cubs team? We'd subtract some really small salaries, but add $6.3mil for Roberts, and $4.75mil for Figgins ($11mil). We'd have $4mil left to spend on RF, plus anything else. I'm just not convinced that DeRosa would be the solution out there. And if we trade off bad SP contracts, we'll have to send a better prospect with them to get anything back let alone not send money. And we can't afford to trade away too many SP (cheap or expensive) without getting SP back.

If we acquire Roberts, we have to get rid of Derosa, or be satisfied with him in RF. He's an improvement over RF based on Murton, but not by as much as the cost differential is. Roberts is $1.5mil more expensive than Derosa, worth the cost differential to me. Figgins is $4mil more expensive than Pie, and if he repeats 2007, worth it, but if not, not. And that would leave us with Theriot at SS, and no backup plan outside of Derosa (and then who in RF?). And a rotation of Z/Lilly/Hill/Marquis + Dempster/Gallagher/Hart/etc. And you'd likely have to send Prior to Anaheim for them to justify the losses.

I can see the issues with the budget. I think we could probably unload Marquis somewhere, and maybe Dempster as well.

I could see us willing to take trash from a team like Texas for Prior and Marquis.

I'll admit I don't really have all the answers. I definitely don't think a deal would go down just as I imagined. There likely would be some other pieces involved.

I don't know if the salaries would work, but in my plan I'd envision us still signing Fukudome for right, but it does look like that would put us way over budget, so I know there's some problems.

derosa was good last year and has a team-friendly contract... is anyone else completely befuddled by the cubs' desperation to find another second baseman?

I am, but Jim Hendry has no reasoning behind anything he does.

I find it funny that this is the case now, when I remember the backlash about DeRosa's contract when he first signed it.

i recall that a small handful of wise posters thought it was a pretty good move :-"

Any news on Roberts?

Nothing really new since yesterday, other than it appears Murton is no longer involved in trade discussions, which will make you happy.

I haven't been on in a while and didn't know Murton was involved anyway. As for any Murton trade, I pretty much support it since we're not going to use him.

Talks were really heated yesterday, and Bruce Levine reported that Cedeno would definitely go in a trade and it was also reported that a pitcher and an outfielder would also go. The pitcher was thought to be Gallagher and the outfielder was thought to be Murton. Apparantly it's not Murton, but it's also not Pie. And Hill will not be traded either.

Where do I push the done deal button?

Where do I push the done deal button?

It's Hendry's belly button. Just have to hunt him down.

Just be forewarned - he giggles like the Pillsbury Doughboy when you do

. . . it's kinda creepy, really.

If you do it with your left hand and do it quickly, he may just sign you onto the roster

people who have been involved in it in some way, shape, or form for years and years often get wrapped up in it--not knowing that baseball is a liar, a cheap, mesmerizing whore that will steal your wallet and stab you in the throat when you're not looking. no one knows anything about baseball because everyone thinks they know everything about baseball.

I am sooo using that in my sig!

Paul Sullivan:

If Fukudome signs this weekend, the Cubs will then turn their focus on bringing in a left-handed bat with speed who can play infield. Their top choice is Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts, though the Orioles are in no hurry to make a deal.

Amen.

Maybe I'm just not attracted to him in the same way others are, but I think that's quite steep.

Doesn't this basically guarantee the Roberts trade will go down sometime soon?
