I thought Richie fell off the face of the Earth. Where does he currently rank in the organization at catcher?

And anyone else we may risk losing (and I know, anyone not on the 40 man but I want specifics :P )

Richie should be a backup in Iowa, just like last season. He's behind Soto, Blanco and Koyie Hill, I'd guess.

Some guys who might be taken are Josh Kroeger, Justin Berg (even though he has awful control), Grant Johnson. Hell, maybe Ryan Harvey.

Cal, I don't believe Berg is eligible. Can you re-check?

Are you sure about Kroeger? I thought he was a ML FA and resigned.

My understanding is that if you are a signed minor league free agent, you are still eligible for the rule 5 draft. At the same time, if any club wanted him they would have just signed him to a deal in free agency rather than have to abide by the rules of the rule 5 draft.

Andy Fox (I think) was signed as a minor league FA a few years back and went on to be drafted in the Rule 5 draft.

I'm pretty sure you are correct. He was signed and then taken in the draft only a few weeks later.

Edit: From Baseball Cube:

Nov 24,2003 - Signed as Free Agent by Rangers. Dec 15,2003 - Selected by Expos from Rangers in Rule 5 major league draft

Shane Lindsay is a guy we can take and stuff on the DL. Would be a smart move IMO.

Is he actually injured or are you just talking shenanigans? And can we really afford to stash him for 60 days in the pen when we primarily work with an 11 man staff?

I thought Lindsay's arm was toast.

I was unsure Brian Barton was eligible (as the topic below mentions). I like him. However, he's old and there are people who are going to say he shouldn't make the team ahead of Angel Pagan or Sam Fuld or whoever. Barton does a little of everything decently or well - he can play all three OF positions, he takes walks, he has a bit of power, he's a good athlete and while strikeouts are not unknown to him he isn't crippled by them. Plus I can't help but feel that even a sub-prime prospect on the Indians is better than a lot of ours. Just last year he was ranked their #6 prospect.

Von Stertzbach sounds like a wrestler.

The pitchers, Fernando Hernandez looks interesting, I'd like to rob the White Sox. I don't know anything about Randor Bierd but the numbers look good.

It happened to the Cubs last year. Jason Smith signed with the Cubs as a minor league FA and then was selected by the Blue Jays in the Rule 5 draft.

I really like Lindsay's arm. If recovery is likely, he's totally worth stashing.
