Has anyone heard if the Cubs would ever consider going for a big name outfielder like a Torrii Hunter or Andruw Jones?

I haven't heard any. They will likely be way too expensive since there isn't much else available as far as top free agents.

Thankfully, no. It sounds like Hendry is going to stay away from both of them. Whether it's because of money or because he's gotten smarter, I really don't care. I'm just glad neither of them will be on the Cubs.

true about the whole past their peak, but they are better than what he got....who knows if pie will ever be able to hit. I could see Jones breaking out in a stadium like Wrigley, but then again he is a strikeout king.

I'd rather give a prospect like Pie the opportunity to fail at league minimum that accept overpaid mediocrity like Hunter and Jones would offer.

Jones and Hunter will be getting 5+ years wherever they sign. The Cubs shouldn't go anywhere near that with those players. Due to the lack of talent on the market, not only will these guys get lots of years, but they will likely also receive too much money.

I'm fine with Pie. The Cubs need to upgrade SS and RF.

trust me im a huge pie fan...but is he going to turn out like another murton or patterson? where do we go next, colvin in the minors?...I'm sick of seeing a platoon of guys playing in the outfield.

I'm not sure how you can compare Murton to Patterson. Murton is still a work in progress and put up good numbers in his only full season.

And the issue here isn't that Pie may or may not succeed, it's that Jones and Hunter are both not good.

murton can't play defense im sorry, hes not an everyday outfielder so the only way he is going to play is through a platoon, he will always be a work in progress

Based on what? He's nothing spectacular, but to say he can't play defense is absurd.

Sign Fukudome. Platoon Murton/Pie. When Pie plays against RHP - Pie in CF, Fukudome in RF. When Murton plays against LHP - Fukudome in CF, Murton in RF. Trade for Dontrelle Willis and sign Kuroda (sp?).

Murton hasn't "turned out" like anything. If Lou would put Floyd out there over him, then you have to think he hasn't gotten a fair shot yet.

It's not really that Lou preferred Floyd over Murton. It's that he preferred a left handed bat over Murton. Cubs management views Matt Murton's bat as redundant. They've made the point over and over by saying they want more left handed bats in the line up.

The Cubs offense is stacked with RH bats. Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, DeRosa and Soto guarantees you at least 5 RH bats of the 8 offensive slots. Theriot makes 6 and Murton playing everyday would make 7.

That's why the Cubs are looking at Fukudome and Crawford. Murton will either hold on to a 4th outfield job or he'll find a new home somewhere else. He's just not in the Cubs plans due to the dominant right handed hitting attack.

It's a shame, but that's what's going on with Matt Murton.

*Directed at Cubs management* How is a left-handed bat a priority when we have a team that can't hit lefties!?

torii and andruw were the cutest couple in jr. high.

Haha. The title of this thread made me think of Romi and Michelle's high school reunion.

Kinda with you there, considering Murton has shown to be one of the teams better hitters against LHP. He deserves to start, but who knows if that is going to happen with the Cubs.

Player A- .280 .329 .455 OPS .783 for his career

Player B- .271 .324 .469 OPS .793 for his career

One of these guys just got traded for a utility man, while the other is going to get at least a 5 yr 75 million dollar contract as a free agent. Please tell me why anybody, would want Torii Hunter.

I think I'd still have some interest in Jones.

One year, $18 million "make good" deal and hit the market again next season?

That would be a good deal if he'd take it.

he wouldn't. if he's considering signing in Washington (which i've read) then he's clearly in it for the big contract

I thought that was Hunter who was considering Washington because of his close friendship with Young?
