with jacoby ellsbury being a new boston god, do you think crisp will be available? he hasn't been that great the past 2 seasons, but a switch to a might bring him back to his ~.800 OPS days in cleveland. he'll make 4.75 million in '08 and 5.75 in '09. i have no idea what it would take, but if it's a reasonable package of prospects, should we explore that?

He's been pretty terrible the past two years. I don't know if I'd give up much to get him. I'd probably rather just let Pie get the shot at CF next year.

Crisp in the last three years:

2005: .300/.345/.465, 110 OPS+

2006: .264/.317/.385, 77 OPS+

2007: .268/.330/.382, 83 OPS+

Jacque Jones in the last three years:

2005: .249/.319/.438, 98 OPS+

2006: .285/.334/.499, 108 OPS+

2007: .285/.335/.400, 87 OPS+

I'm going to go with a big fat "no" on that one.

+1

Unless they wanted to trade him for someone like Eyre straight up and we could have him on the roster instead of Pagan.

Don't we need a post overvaluing outfield defense right about here? Okay, I'll do it.

With Coco Crisp in center and Pie in right it will be the best outfield defense ever and make the 2008 Cubs pitching look like the 2003 Dodgers.

But don't advanced defensive metrics show that crisp has been amazing this year and has (possibly more than) made up for his bat?

I'd definitely explore it, right now given his value it appears to be a low risk/high reward type situation.

I'm not a fan of signing the bad players from a W.S. champion and then deluding myself into thinking I got more than what I got.

A poor hitter is still a poor hitter, no matter if he has a ring on his finger.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the how the red sox finished their season.

I know, but you know damn well if we signed Crisp you would start hearing the "he's a winner" crap.

Kind of hard to call him a winner considering he got benched during the World Series in favor of a rookie with hardly any major league experience.

We signed Marquis even though he was scratched from the Cards' roster

I don't want to scare anyone, though. 8-)

Surely the Cubs will find a better option than Coco.

Coca Crisp is an excellent defensive CF - outside of that, since he came to Boston he's shown little to nothing at the plate and if you thought Pierre had a lousy arm for a CF, you should see Crisps!!!

I vote no - there has to be a better option

I suppose there's some merit in buying low with Crisp. He's as available as one can get.

However, his salary, given our overall needs and potential lack of funds makes him a relatively poor investment. If Boston were to pick up a good portion of his salary, or take back Eyre or Dempser or one of our other crap contracts, I'd not be opposed to it.

say what you want about WARP, but crisp posted a 6.0 WARP (8.3 WARP3) with that batting line this year. his FRAR/FRAA was 55/32, which is ungodly. a .275-.280 EqA with that type of defense would make him a pretty valuable player.

What does a 6 WARP translate into, something like a $12M MORP? Not too shabby.

Compare those defensive metrics to years past though. That's a huge jump from the past.

And actually, look at Jacque Jones's defensive metrics for center field in 2007, extremely impressive. They would indicate Jacque was better than the "name" guys like Torii Hunter and Vernon Wells.
