he had a NTC too, right? that would have further complicated things

He might have, but I don't think it would complicate things anymore than attempting to trade him prior to him opting out of his contract.

I agree, the whole point is that the Yanks would be trading him to a team he would sign an extention with.

Plus, from everything I've heard, I don't know if hes "officially" opted out. If he has, then I guess its a moot point.

I don't know how complicated it really would have been. If I'm Stoneman and Cashman calls me and says, "hey, ARod's gonna opt out and hes considering signing with you guys. If you want to save $20M (the texas $), we'll trade him to you for Brandon Wood (or whomever of some value) and give you guys a 72 hour window for an extention"

Seems pretty simple to me.

Its a win win because the yanks get something for nothing, the Angels give up something, but save $20, some of which is going to go as "extra $" to ARod, and some to their coffers. It doesn't even have to be as valuable as Brandon Wood (although after another crappy year, his value is questionable). The Yanks obviously aren't in the drivers seat and should pretty much be interested in taking any B prospect.

Instead of reading about 70 pages I'm going to step out on a limb and say the reaction was negative.

Negative = Me, KC, Jon, TT, Navin, CubsinNY, Rob (might have missed a few)

Positive= Everyone else

You missed me. I may have been more negative on the Soriano signing than anyone here. Can't find the link, but I remember stating that it would land on the short list of the worst contracts in the history of sports. Too bad search is still disabled. I complained about that contract so much I got sick of my own bitching. I found this on page 17 of the signing thread:

I HATE this contract. Writing off 2007 and retooling for 2008 would have been infinitely preferrable to this.

Why would ARod agree to an extension with the Angels without knowing what's out there on the free market?

frost, I hated the contract too - I was right behind you a few posts down:

A five-year deal will be bad enough, but if it's eight years?? I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Face it, if Soriano's signed Drew's *not coming*. Hendry will think he's done as far as the offense goes, with an OF of Murt, Sor and Jones. Next he will sign Lilly or Meche and call it an offseason.

Sorry to digress, but I'm feeling the need to dream right now.

Step 1: pony up and sign ARod for some ridiculous contract that in all liklihood will hamstring the Cubs for years to come.

Step 2: Trade Marshall and Gallagher for Bedard. It may take more and Baltimore would probably ask for Hill, but then again MacPhail seems to over value Cubs players/prospects as much as the Cubs do themselves.

Step 3: Trade Jacque to save a little cash, though keeping him and platooning him with Murton in RF or as insurance for Pie wouldn't be a bad idea.

Lineup:

Soriano - LF

DeRose - 2B

DLee - 1B

ARod - SS

Aram - 3B

Soto - C

Murton - RF

Pie - CF

Pitcher

Rotation:

Zambrano

Bedard

Lilly

Hill

Marquis

That team would win 95+ games if healthy, and that's without the possibility of Prior returning to form. Now back to reality, and the disapointment that is sure to ensue.

I think Baltimore wants bats, but if they would accept that deal I am 100% on board.

Because the angels can kick him back some of the 20M that is being saved with the Texas money.

To clarify things, I think you'd have to struggle to find that many people here, if any, that actually "liked" the idea of signing him for that long and for that much money.

And they can compete with nobody in their signing of him.

Listening to all the hoopla today, I'm left scratching my head.

Hasn't Arod spent his Yankee career being booed? I wonder how many times he's heard he isn't a true Yankee? Jeter and Arod aren't BFF's. Arod's wife wearing the F#%* You! shirt to Yankee Stadium was classic.

Arods already filthy rich. Why are so many people making this about the money? My gut tells me they guy just wants out of NY and I don't blame him.

Because it is about the money. But so what? that's what they play for.

ARod/Boras are floating a 262 million dollar number around. That is EXACTLY twice as much as the higest paid athlete in sports.

According to Keith Olberman.

I disagree that it's about the money. It wasn't about the money when he begged out of Texas offering to give up money in the process. He's just sick of being blamed for everything that goes wrong with the Yankees. He'd never be appreciated in New York like he would in most other places, why voluntarily stay in that situation?

I say give him eleventy billion smitherines if he so desires.

I'd gleefully pee my pants if we had A-Rod.

Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, and A-Rod in the same lineup. . .. . . mmmmm, mmmm, mmmm.

Me too. I can't believe any Cub fan would not want ARod on the Cubs. Just spend the money and do it.

why does everyone hate on Boras for making his clients as much money as possible when that's exactly what his job is?

because they want the money? This isn't complicated - he wanted out of new york and boras told him he would still get the money.

for pro athletes, it's either about the money or about the money. and if they say it isn't, they're lying

If you want to say "for Boras, it's all about the money", then fine. Of course Boras is drooling to put Arod on the market. I can't stand the man, but if I were a ball player, he's the guy I want representing me.

Arod opted out without even sitting down with the Yanks. If it was about the money, don't you think he'd at least sit down with them and hear what the richest team in baseball has to offer?
