I will make a bold prediction here:

This will be the longest thread of the offseason.

but will it be anywhere near as entertaining as the Soriano signing thread?

At least this time I don't think I'll be arguing against everyone!!! YAY.

I was on your side last time, nilo.

Ahh yes, sorry CR. There were a few of us. I think possibly meph too.

I hope this wasn't already posted, but . . . what a strange premise Rosenthal has here. Anyone really think an a-rod deal (with, uh, who knows?) is actually close, rather than being the typical Boras long-drawn out affair?

The deal is done. Or darn near close to it.

I don't know the team. I don't know the terms. But I know this much: There is no way Alex Rodriguez would have opted out of his contract with the Yankees unless he and his agent, Scott Boras, knew they had a bigger score coming.

Wouldn't that be tampering?

I don't know the rules, but yeah that does seem wrong.

Mostly it seems like Rosenthal is popping off without a real clue what he's talking about.

It's a fun thread to re-visit from time to time.

Yeah I have no idea what he is talking about. I'm sure Boras just knew the market well enough, and knew that he could get more than what the Yankees were offering. I doubt that some deal is imminent.

Instead of reading about 70 pages I'm going to step out on a limb and say the reaction was negative.

Negative = Me, KC, Jon, TT, Navin, CubsinNY, Rob (might have missed a few)

Positive= Everyone else

From the Sori signing thread. Good times.

I'm not sure if I even posted in that huge thread, but I was certainly against it.

Man that was fun.

Gotta love 8 years 136M for a guy who out OPSed his NL position average by 63 points and is on the wrong side of 30 with skills that typically deteriorate (and have alreasy started to) quickly.

But he was a 40-40-40 guy!!!!!

I was on the "It's cool to finally get the biggest free agent on the market but it sucks that the free agent class sucks, and that we severely overpaid in terms of years and dollars," side.

wow, Jim Rome just talked about A-Rod and I completely agreed with him. creepy

did he call him chris everet?

no, but he basically called anyone who was calling/emailing saying the Yankees would be better off with a team of Brosius-esque role players than with A-Rod complete morons.

Heres one point that hasn't been talked about much. Why don't the Yanks trade ARod?

Boras told (left a VM) for Cashman telling him ARod was going to opt out before he even met to listen to the offer that the Yanks were going to put on the table. So, this isn't JUST about money, its about where hes playing. Texas' money would still be in the situation. Its ARod whos flushing Texas' 20M down the toilet. It'd be a win-win-win for ARod, the Yanks, and the team acquiring him. The only loser would be Texas.

I was against the money and length of contract, but not Soriano himself.

That might have been an option prior to A-Rod opting out of his clause (assuming an extension could be worked out), but I think it's something that would have been way too complicated.

A-Rod could just elect to opt out if he didn't like the team he was going to be traded to. In other words, A-Rod controls his destination by opting out.

If the Yankees did find a suitor to A-Rod's liking, how difficult would it be to work out a trade between two teams that both teams would be happy with, and could an extension be worked out that would make A-Rod happy?

For example, knowing A-Rod is pretty much leaving, what would be a fair offer to guarantee you get him? And would it satisfy the Yankees enough?

he had a NTC too, right? that would have further complicated things

He might have, but I don't think it would complicate things anymore than attempting to trade him prior to him opting out of his contract.
