"It's rock hard, it's as fast as turf, but it looks like there's been a dozen cows out there grazing this week," Pirates left fielder Nate McLouth said.

Pittsburgh manager Jim Tracy characterized the outfield as "horrendous," said it was not of major league caliber and was as bad as he'd ever seen in the big leagues.

Tracy said it's nearly impossible for an outfielder to set his feet to make a throw because it's so difficult to corral the ball.

"There's undulations. The ball's changing directions as it's rolling to you. It's bouncing all over the place," he said Saturday.

"If the ball is hit sharply through the infield, it's like walking out there on Sheffield or Waveland Avenue and hitting a baseball out in the middle of the street," Tracy said. "That's how quickly the ball is moving out there. I don't know what they're going to do."

Even Soriano is expressing concerns.

"It's not comfortable," Soriano said Saturday. "There are like a lot of little holes, you know what I mean. Sometimes when they hit a ground ball, you have to be careful. ... I'm just more worried when the ball is coming, I'm not worried about my legs because it's not that bad. I'm more worried about the holes. They can give you a tricky bounce."

One time, I was playing catch in my back yard... Going for a fly ball, I stepped in a rabbit hole and twisted my ankle. It really hurt.

As for Wrigley, aren't there plans to redo the entire field this off-season?

There were, but the ownership uncertainty seems to have slowed things up a bit. Hopefully this press lately will motivate people to get it done, because it needs it badly. Plus if it is going to get done, work will have to begin immediately after the season.

And everyone laughed when Levine said the field looked terrible.

That's because Bruce Levine looks terrible.

Look, as much as we want to defend our team, they're probably right. Wrigley is falling apart. Cement, bad field, bad facilities, bad food.

Seal the cement, redo the field, upgrade the facilities, and the easiest problem to fix is probably the food.

They need to fix the field and the concrete, but what really needs to be done is to simply gut the place and expand the clubhouses, replace the bathrooms, etc.

Sounds like a lot of work. Not sure if it can be completed in one offseason.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that they do it all this offseason. Over the course of the next 2-3, maybe.

But the field must be done. If they won't, MLB could compel them to.

Here's a Trib link on the subject:

The comments from Alfonso are especially worrisome. Granted, I expect the home players to kind of "know" their field, but if it is really this crappy out there, I'd hate to see potential post-season victory spoiled by a chewed up turf.

Remember...this is the Cubs. An infamous bad bounce that leaves us all in tears is not out of the question.

bad facilities, bad food.

I was at a Sox game the other day and had a fabulous lobster springroll with an Asian marinated flank steak and truffled mashed potatoes. Fabulous.

Yes. I'm tired of peeing in a trough.

Why were you eating with the enemy?

I'm thinking one of these years the Cubs will have to play a season on the road while Wrigley is completely renovated. Probably split the "home" games between Milwaukee and US Celluar. I can't see any ownership group just tearing Wrigley down and building anew somewhere else.

Not me. I'm all for new and bigger bathrooms, but just make the troths longer, too. You can get a lot more pee-ers in and out using those than just urinals and stalls.
