I'm hoping it doesn't come to this, but with the Cubs and Brewers being tied in the loss column, a one-game playoff is a realistic possibility.

First, where would they play?

Second, who would pitch for us?

Traschel again...he was good last time he pitched in a one game playoff. :D

I'm just wondering with these 3 day rest decisions, if Lou is trying to manipulate the schedule in the event of a tie.

They would play in Chicago because the Cubs won the coin flip.

As far as pitching matchups, I think it's too early to tell. The Cubs pitching rotation is not set for the final week yet.

Great! When do they do the flip?

They did it a week or two ago. I remember seeing a thread on it somewhere.

No, Lou is really just trying to skip the 5th starter as much as possible because he's not comfortable with Marshall or Trachsel on the mound right now. Lou is trying to pitch his 4 best pitchers as much as possible these last two weeks. I'm not sure Lou has any idea what will happen with a 1 game playoff, and I think he's pulling out all the stops in order to try to win before that.

BTW, from the other thread on pitching probables for the rest of the year, it looks like it will probably be Jason Marquis if it goes to a 1 game playoff.

Lou said last week that he's planning on pitching Z, Hill, and Lilly (in that order) during the last series in Cincy. So that would leave Marquis to start a one game playoff.

I know Marquis has been pitching better as of late, but let's hope we don't need a one game playoff. I'd feel much more comfortable with either Z or Lilly.

nitpicky, but....

so homefield advantage for the WS is determined by the outcome of an exhibition game in which half the players probably don't care and the game is not managed to have the best available players on the field for the vast majority of the game, or in the case of this year the best hitter in baseball did not even play, but homefield for a one game playoff is determined by a coin flip, even though one team beat the other 9 out of 15 games this year? at the same time, if two teams in a division are tied at the end of the year and one of them is the wildcard, they crown the team with the best vs. record as the division champ and the vs. loser as the wildcard.

I can understand flipping for a one game playoff to determine homefield for a playoff to determine wildcard, or if there is a three way tie, but shouldn't you get some credit for beating down the opponent you end the season tied with?

Yes. We are already won the coin flip in any event. So we would host a one game playoff.

he has a good point though. the coin flip is dumb unless the teams are tied head-to-head (which usually doesn't happen since they play an uneven # of games against each other in most cases)

I thought we won the flip vs. the Cardinals, but lost in the event of a tie with the Brewers? I could be wrong, but I thought that's what I heard.

Nope, won vs. brewers, lost vs Cards.

Thanks - I was just about to post that I was remembering it the same way JJD did. Not that it matters much, as the Cubs have done well against Milwaukee in both places, and it would just mean Miller Park gets to be Wrigley North one last time this season.

I'm still glad it's Wrigley.

When you put it like that, it seems that MLB makes up rules on the fly for determining the post-season.

- All-Star game for WS home field advantage

- coin flip for one-game playoff

- Head-to-head record for division/wild card

i really, REALLY don't understand why MLB is so reluctant to use records to determine things. best record determines homefield in every other sport

So can I buy tix to this one game playoff yet?

They wouldn't go on sale until after the final game next Sunday.

like in 1998, when downtown Crystal Lake, Illinois became a Nascar practice track for fifteen minutes following the best thing Neifi Perez ever did for the Cubs. superior pit work (parking far away from the doors and running into the store) turned a top twenty finish into sixth place, netting me and my crew 8 trophies.

Because doing that would just make way too much sense.

Posted

None of those rules make much sense.

For example, last year when it looked like the Cards might go to a 1 game playoff with Houston, they performed the coin flip. Game would have been played in the Juice Box.

They had played 16 times during the year. And the Astros hosted 9 or 10 of them.

You would think that if two teams were tied at the end of the year, that maybe the reason would be that head to head, one team had four more home games. Any one of those shifts to St. Louis, the Cards probably win, and there is no tiebreaker ( in theory ).

The tiebreaker didn't come through, but if it had, it should have been in St. Louis.

Dumb.
