what the hell?

White Sox signed manager Ozzie Guillen to a multiyear contract extension through the 2012 season.

Five more years? Well, it's not Ken Williams' money, so what does he care? It's certainly not going to have any effect on his budget for signing players. Locking up Guillen creates an aura of stability that may prove useful when it's time to sign free agents this winter. There's hardly any chance that Guillen will actually last the full five years, but this will deflect some controversy through at least the first half of 2008. If he needs to be fired next year or in 2009, it's still only a minor hit to Jerry Reinsdorf's wallet.

I saw that....I'll bet a year of premium that he doesn't make it past 2010...Any takers?

If I lose and don't owe you anything than yea I'll take that bet.

What kind of a bet is that? I'm going more on the you pay for my year if I win, I pay for your year if I lose theorem

Hell no, that's a sure thing.

Has Jay Mariotti written a column on this yet? Because that's one Mariotti column I would like to read.

Yes, one of the Sox fans at my work spent an hour complaining about it.

link plz.

And in the biggest of blind spots, they've extended Guillen despite the probable offseason availability of Tony La Russa, who never would have allowed the Sox to collapse the last two seasons and surely would point a talented team toward the playoffs next year. If La Russa can keep the St. Louis Cardinals in contention through their constant storm of tragedies and crises, imagine how he might whip the Sox into quick shape

Oh my god.

I'll give TLR credit, if he did go (back) to the South Side, he'd somehow be even more hated by Cubs fans.

Haha, kudos TLR for keeping your team in contention (and below .500).

While the column was pretty funny I have to bring up this point:

They've locked him in through 2012 even though three of his four seasons have ended badly.

Guillen's record these four years and the team's place finish:

2007: 61-84 (last)

2006: 90-72 (3)

2005: 99-63 (1)

2004: 83-79 (2)

I understand that the Sox choked away a playoff spot last year and that they've been absolutely abysmal but...

- The last time the Cubs had back-to-back 90 win seasons was 1929 and 1930.

- The Sox have had 90 win seasons in two of the last three years. The last two Cubs winning seasons took place in 1998 and 1989.

- The last time the Cubs had three consecutive winning seasons was 1970-72.

- 1970-1972 was also the last time the Cubs had 3 successive top three finishes.

I'm in no way trying to defend Ozzie by pointing out these facts.

While I agree with the signing, I disagree with the length. I would've given him 2-3 years to do what he can. If it's unsatisfying, bring in Joe Girardi or for our own entertainment, Dusty Baker.

''The Hispanic Jackie Mason,'' says his enabler, Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, who is wrong to think either Guillen or Mason is funny.

Well played, Mr. Mariotti.
