I can't tell if this thread is debating what it means to be an ace or who the best/most reliable pitcher is. I hope it's the latter, because the former is pointless.

As of right now, if all 5 starters were on enough rest and there was only one game left that mattered, Ted Lilly most consistently gives the team a chance to win, and I think Hill and Marquis are a tie for second. Zambrano easily has the highest ceiling on the staff, and in the three seasons prior to this one, he has easily been "ace" material, but he's been very bipolar this season, with plenty more games on the crappy end of the spectrum.

To respond to the previous post asking about whether yesterday or tomorrow matters more, I think cubbiechris nailed it to say that it's always today that matters most, and Lilly is that guy on this team.

When I started this thread, I didn't think there would be all of this discussion over semantics. My point is that Lilly has been the best Cub starter all year, has been the starter to break all of the losing streaks, and continues to be the pitcher who gives the Cubs the best chance to win games this year. To me, that defines the "ace" of a staff. I'm not talking about next year, who has the best stuff, his flyball ratio, or whether he would be the "ace" on other teams.

Oh come on now Btb....if you said the sky looked blue you'd get a nice little semantic debate about what shade of blue!

Anyone who knows anything, knows the sky is:

Teal 12% of the time

"Sky Blue" ironically only 8%

Aqua 9%

Midnight Blue 7%

Black 32.6%

various shades of the red/orange/yellow families 4%

others 25.3%

of the other categories "blue" constitutes less than 1%

my knowledge of the subject is so far superior to those of you who observe with a crayola 8-pack mind. I see the full 256 crayon box.

This post should go up against 63 other posts in a full fledged tournament of sweet posts. We could like vote on it or something. Then the winner could get a t-shirt proclaiming them the greatest on earth. Seriously though, outstanding work.

The Cubs don't have an ace. Ted Lilly and Rich Hill have been the closest thing to one this year, although Zambrano is probably the only one on the staff who stands a chance of being an actual ace.

So if Z is an Ace does that make Traschel the joker?

Z has the potential do be dominant every time he goes out there. Hey Saber dudes, numbers wise who's been more productive, Lilly or Z?

What defines and "Ace"? Do you consider this guy an Ace?

all shades of gray are pissed that they are lumped in under "others" but can't get over their internal argument about whether it is gray or grey, and thus are unable to put forward a strong unified front to confront this stereotype.
