Didn't the best stretch of the season come when Soriano was red hot? If he gets hot again he has the ability to carry the team into the postseason.

The question came up...........

Team record by leadoff hitter

CUBS are 52-44 when Soriano hits in the leadoff spot
CUBS are 14-18 when Theriot hits in the leadoff spot
CUBS are 1-2 when Pie hits in the leadoff spot

Posted

I was really hoping this would be about the annoying poster at NSBB named Alphonso Soriano.

But that's just me.

If they put Soriano on irrevokable waivers, he'd get even less interest than Manny

If you made manny 3(? was that the season?) years younger and wound back his contract and put him on waivers again, he'd be grabbed.

We're clearly not dealing with the same Soriano here. Remember, a good chunk of that 52-44 was in early summer when everyone was clicking. Soriano admited he isnt at 100% and wont be able to do much base stealing or legging singles into doubles or doubles into triples. Theriot, on the other hand has gotten 2 infield singles(I dont care what the scorers say, that one off Linebrink was an infield single) the past 2 games. Thats what leadoff hitters do. Not swing at everything in site.

You need production from your leadoff and clean up hitters, and weve got none of that the past few games. Tuesday, the rest of the team was able to pick up the slack. last night, not so much.

I would prefer Kendall batting lead off and DeRossa batting 2nd myself. Somehow I dont think that is going to happen though. Truth is Theriot and Soriano are only above JJ in OBP for primary starters. JJ is probably closing the gap pretty quick also.

Remember half of that 52-44 was prior to 03 June when everyone was not clicking.

Soriano has surely shown he can be productive hitting leadoff.......

batting 1st AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS BABIP

Don't overreact to 2 games coming back off the DL. Soriano will be fine.

If the Cubs had twenty more wins, they'd be in first place by a mile.

Honestly, you can't really compare them. Most of the time when someone else batted leadoff Soriano was not in the lineup and you lose his production.

Personal rule of thumb, which every team shoudl use. Never give out contracts for more than 5 years. It can only end bad.

Defend the contract...someone...please

who cares, Cubs are always going to lose no matter who is playing for the Cubs.

This attitude would be less annoying if you didn't do it in every single post. I think you do it intentionally just to piss people off.

I wish we gave this type of money to other players who were available in the past over Soriano. His contract is terrible and I don't even want to think how bad he will be when there will be 3 years still left on the contract.

Unfortunately, Soriano isn't anywhere near as good as Manny. So winding the clock back on Manny doesn't really level the playing field. It just puts it even further in Manny's favor.

Usually. But I would've given Pujols an 8-9 year deal coming out of his rookie contract without hesitation. Same goes for ARod. His contract didn't turn bad because of the length, but more because the Rangers spent too much money on him to be able to afford to put a team around him. That's on them for allocating more payroll than they could afford to one player. And I'd do the same for Miguel Cabrera when he hits free agency, assuming he doesn't keep getting fatter and fatter.

Soriano was really bad before the injury.

He was. I'm beginning to think he's going to be prone to long slumps forever because he doesn't seem like to care much for coaching. It's always Lou needing to tip-toe around Sori's wishes. I hate that, I don't care the kind of money you make.

We're going to be tip-toeing around this guy for 7 more years. It's really starting to get under my skin.

Posted
What gets under my skin is that the Cubs are paying an elite salary to an above average player. It really, really sucks.

.243/.264/.411 in the second half so far. That's Neifi territory. He's been a hair better than Jones was last year overall.

I just hope like hell they win big in the next 2-3 years, and then find a way to produce several position prospect in years 4-8, because they are going to have to hide him.

Yeah there is a difference between that and a player who has a career .830 OPS coming into this season, coming off a career year in his 7th season.

It's been under my skin. The guy is hobbled with a bad quad but he has good HR power, yet the manager is too afraid to take him out of the leadoff spot. Who is running the team, Lou or Soriano?

Well, in fairness, he's actually not really overpaid this season. It's going to really start to suck when he's pulling in $13m at age 38 or whatever.

And frankly, if he could play CF and hit lower in the order so we could take advantage of that .525 SLG, I wouldn't be upset with his production at all.
