The teams did not complete a trade for Loaiza; the A's simply allowed the Dodgers to assume the rest of Loaiza's contract — just over $1 million this season, plus Loaiza's entire $7 million salary for 2008 and a $375,000 buyout or $7.5 million club option for '09.

David Wells and now Esteban Loaiza. Are the Dodgers that desperate for pitching?

Yes, it goes severely downhill after Penny, Lowe and Billingsley. With Schmidt and Wolf hurt, they are using guys like Hendrickson, Stults and Tomko/Wells in their rotation.

They're like the Cardinals of the west coast, pulling everything off the scrap heap.

Pretty good move by LA if that's all they gave up. There was a stretch last year when Loaiza was really good. Considering their current options, he is an upgrade.

EDIT: For this year that is. Next year's 7mil might hurt a bit but it all depends on the status of Wolf and Schmidt for next year.

Could this foreshadow how the Cubs handle Marquis next year?

You make an interesting point. With the condition of the market and the cost for a pitcher, it seems possible that if Marquis reverts back to '06 form, there will still be some team that would take him off the Cubs hands. Lets hope that Marquis has a good year for the Cubs and earns his money next year.

I'm surprised that the Phillies didn't put in a claim. I believe that their pitching is in worse shape than the Dodgers (especially with Hamels on the DL)..... Dodgers may have have had first waiver crack at him however, since their record is just slightly worse than PHL's.

Sounds like Wolf won't be back next year.
