Pignatiello was the player I would have sent down, but I'm still surprised the Cubs did it and went down to 11 pitchers for the time being (even it is only for a few days). Good work Cubs.

Good, the Cubs did the right thing with Piggy being sent down to allow Murton and Pie both a chance at the playoff roster.

That's precisely why I'm not surprised. With the day off yesterday, the bullpen is rested, and it's only four days before rosters expand.

I see that Hill can't hit, how was his defense?

Very good. That and the fact that all of the pitchers reportedly loved working with him is what kept him around so long.

Weird that no team wanted him.

What is required in order to be on the playoff roster and how many spots is it?

Why is it weird?

A 25 player playoff roster is set on August 31st, consisting of the players currently on the big league squad. In addition, any player on the DL is added. For each player on the 60-day DL, the team may add a player to the eligible list during the playoffs (as long as they play the same position and the newly added player was in the organization on August 31). Then, the team can choose 25 players from their eligible roster list before each round of the playoffs. The three guys on the 60-day DL are all pitchers - Angel Guzman, Mark Prior and Roberto Novoa (and Guzman will hopefully be off the 60-day DL before the regular season is over).

The player added doesn't have to play exactly the same position as the player on the 60-day DL he's replacing, does he? My understanding is that substitutions have to be pitcher for pitcher and position player for position player, but you could, for example, replace an infielder with an outfielder.

Argh, poor wording on my part. I meant (as you noted) position player for position player and pitcher for pitcher.

It seems more logical to me, because if a player is being added primarily as a pinch hitter whether he's a right-handed or left-handed hitter could be more important than what position he plays in the field.
