What no Colvin?

And is this a poor showing from the Cubs or is it me?

I'm surprised about Colvin not being there (my guesses had been: Hart, Johnson, Roquet, Colvin, Reynolds or Fuld and someone from A-ball like Barney or Matulia).

By the way, Nathan said that Oneri told him Ryan Harvey was going.

Is there any kind of rule as to who can play in the AFL? Can a 40-man rostered player go to the AFL? Can a AAA guy like Kroeger or Hoffpauir go?

My guesses included some current 40-man guys like Samardzija and Guzman (DL), and some older guys like Mateo, Harben, and McGehee.

There are rules on who can and cannot go. Most players there are AA and AAA players with one A-ball player allowed (Lansford for the Cubs this year). Guys on the 40-man roster can go but they can't have lost their rookie eligibility (which knocks off Guzman). Mateo can't go because foreign-born players can't pitch if their county has a winter league and the DR does. Harben was there last year and is probably on a tight leash after TJS and the Cubs will be careful with Samardzija because of the career high in innings he's thrown this season.

I mis-posted. Harvey is Hawaii.

Good for him, I thought that'd be a good place for him (and I thought Lansford would go there...whoops, the Cubs obviously think he's further advanced than I did).

He is further advanced. He would have been our MVP and top prospect without missing the last 6 weeks...

I was looking at their roster and the Cards sent alot of interesting guys too. Rasmus is tearing up AA, Hoffpauir and Mather are both hitting well at AAA, and Perez has been a shut down closer at AA and AAA this year, and Motte has been a shut down closer as well.

Any relation to Micah?

RHP Sean Gallagher will replace the injured Grant Johnson. Second straight year Johnson has been lifted from the AFL roster after being placed on it initially.

Nice to hear Sean had a good outing, he hadn't faced any live hitters in a while. I do know he was throwing bullpens while with the Cubs and all the reports were good. I had spoken with Sean yesterday and he wasn't sure when he was going to pitch. I will be heading to AZ in a few weeks to watch some games.

Is Sam Fuld a prospect? Should I ever think he is gonna get a real shot with the Cubs, Raisin?

At the very least he's behind Pie and (probably) Patterson. That they sent him to the AFL suggests that they'd like to get an idea as to how far.

I'm probably the biggest Sam Fuld fan out there, so I know I'm biased on whether he's got a real shot, but I would say that he's got a better shot than Patterson at this point. He covers the outfield better than Patterson at this point (helps that he's a natural OF vs Patterson playing most of his life at 2B). I think Patterson's future with the big club may have gotten short circuited after getting sent down in September. Being late is a bone-headed thing, and if Lou wanted him back after the playoffs were over, he could have done that but didn't.

Originally, I remember hearing that Sam's spot in the AFL this year was a tryout for the 40 man, but now that he's been put on the 40 man, I wonder what the extra exposure is really for...

I wonder what the Cubs are going to do with Epatt. They don't seem to think he's good enough with the glove to play 2b anymore and unfortunately that's where he's got the most value. Unless he can play CF, I don't see him being in the Cubs' plans for very much longer. The showing up late isn't helping his case any either.

As for Fuld, he could be a good leadoff hitter, CF type. He doesn't hit for any power whatsoever, but has put up some good OBP numbers so far in his career.
