Was great to watch the game online last night. Sean finished really well and both his SL and CB were working great last night. I think he has become more comfortable coming out of the bullpen but I am keeping my fingers crossed that come ST he gets a shot at a starting role.

Why was he used in relief in Arizona? Were they trying to limit his innings?

Every team in the AFL has the option of designating a pitcher for a SP, the cubs never submitted a name. Sean was also a late addition to the AFL as he was added to replace another player.

And Sean was replacing a sure-fire reliever in Grant Johnson so that might be part of the reason. He did get 2 starts.

Sean had a very promising fall, I hope he can use it as a springboard for any #5 starter competition that might take place next March.

Woo, Sam Fuld goes 1/2 and then gets pulled, clinching a BA over .400 for his AFL campaign.

Gallagher was #18 on BA's top 20 AFL prospects. The top 5:

1. Cameron Maybin, of, Peoria Saguaros (Tigers)

2. Evan Longoria, 3b, Scottsdale (Devil Rays)

3. Travis Snider, of, Scottsdale (Blue Jays)

4. Matt LaPorta, of, Mesa (Brewers)

5. Adam Miller, rhp, Surprise (Indians)

18. Sean Gallagher, rhp, Surprise (Cubs)

Gallagher's fastball velocity jumped from the upper 80s in 2005 to 90-94 mph in 2006, and he carried that improved momentum into last season, jumping from Double-A to the big leagues after just eight Triple-A starts. In addition to his fastball, Gallagher features a plus curveball and ever-improving changeup. He pounds the zone with three pitches. He went through his first six appearances unscathed in the AFL, before finally giving up an earned run after 10 straight scoreless innings. Gallagher will have to watch the weight on his stocky frame, but he's able to maintain a consistent down angle on his pitches through easily repeatable mechanics.

Chris Kline Chat:

Q: Jon from Lexington, KY asks:

I'll get it out of the way. Sam Fuld bats .402 and doesn't even sniff the list?

A: Chris Kline: Well, he turns 26 in a few days, so that was against him. But Fuld is a valuable commodity and will find his way to the big leagues in some role. He can play all three OF spots and is just nails at the plate. Nothing fazes that guy. I think the thing that impressed me that I guess I was just missing before was his arm strength. He threw several balls from the warning track in right on the fly to the line at third base. With accuracy.

Q: Navin from Pasadena, CA asks:

In his limited time with Mesa, how did Steve Clevenger look defensively as a catcher? How likely is it that he can stick as a catcher in terms of defense?

A: Chris Kline: Good receiver, but needs to block balls better and his throwing mechanics need work. I know it's a small sample size, but he went 0-for-5 trying to gun down runners. He's young and needs to get better, but the athleticism is there.

Interesting, thanks Raisin. Patterson and Piggy really had a nice time over there by the looks of it. Is Pignatiello still with the team? Hendry has traded so many minor league guys I'm not sure I remember who's still in their organization!

Posted

EPatt, Fox, Harben and Piggy are still in the organization. Piggy finished in the majors, the other 3 in the minors. Harben needed Tommy John surgery and recovered well enough that the Cubs added him to the 40-man roster this offseason.

Holdzkom was taken in the Rule 5 draft by the Astros but then returned. The Cubs (in a bit of a surprise) waived him and he eventually signed with the Red Sox. He's back at the AFL this season, replacing the Red Sox' injured Craig Hansen.

Rapada was traded for Craig Monroe. Moore went to the Orioles as part of the Steve Trachsel trade.

Cool...thanks! Piggy is left handed too, correct? I could see him replacing Ohman on the big roster.
