Dayton Moore has very quietly done a very good job since becoming GM. Their farm system has improved, the 25 man roster has improved, and their international scouting has improved to where they are as active as most of the large market teams.

They'll likely have a 10+ game improvement over last year.

Since June they have been 36-32 and outscored their opponents 351-297.

Sweet. Put them in a division with the Pirates, Nats, Rays, and Orioles and might have a fighting chance of not finishing last every seaon.

...or just put them in a division with the white sox.

Meche has done well, compared to almost all of the mid tier FA signings, he has been among the most productive. He signs Dotel fairly cheap and gets Kyle Davies out of it. Their best pitcher this year (Bannister) was acq'd for Burgos. He got De La Rosa for Graffanino.

Their farm system has improved as well. For what resources they have, he has been almost perfect.

still not a fan of the gil meche signing

Meche was an Ivan Rodriguez/Maggs signing where the team clearly had to outspend everyone else in order to attract them to a terrible team. I know there's this axiom about not spending big money when you're in the down part of a success cycle, but there's also value in not throwing out prospects that aren't ready yet to the wolves and in actually showing your fanbase that you're trying to get better.

I dont think that the A's or the Twins have a lot higher payrolls than KC. These 2 teams have proven you can be competitive on the field without being competitive in payroll. The Royals also had a great following in the 70s and 80s. It is not inconceivable for them to build themselves to a midmarket team.

I'd love to have Dayton Moore as our next GM.

Failing him, I'd be very happy to have Antonelli from Cleveland.

How much more would I like their future had they went with Lincecum, Miller, or Kershaw over Hochevar though? Oh and Moore didn't have a hand in adding their two studs. Baird was the one who got Butler and Gordon, and he was ripped for the Butler picked. Ripped.

Moore wasn't around for the Hochevar drafting though.

these two teams have proven you can be competitive for a couple of years if you have a slew of talented young players all come up at the same time. after that, you have to start spending some money to sustain it.

I was trying to point out that if KC was to become competitive then their fans in the past have proven to support them. Which could help them make there way to being a mid-market club.
