Okay so here's something that I began quite a while back but it ended up dying out. I'd like to revive it this offseason, so here's how it would work.

For each position on the baseball diamond, I'd give a list of about 20 players (probably will use Bill James' rankings as an easy start, then probably add a few more names) along with a link to their Baseball Reference page (though I also like the BP pages with more nerdy stats like WARP3/EqA). Then you give your top 10 list. At the end of a week or two, I'll give each player points (10 for first, down to 1 for 10th) and then take the averages to give an overall NSBB top 10.

Yes. One of my fave books is the Bill James Abstract in which he takes the best 200 or so at each position and even breaks it down by the era the player was active in. I'd love to engage in a similar analysis.

If anyone argues who the best SS is of all time, then we got a problem.

Honus Wagner takes the crown.

If ARod had stayed at SS, there could be debate. But he didn't. So there's not.

let's just save the time and have murtonfan dictate the list.

Now if you can convince everyone else.

Ernie Banks is another that I think would be way near the top of the list if he had spent his entire career at shortstop.

Maybe there could also be a utility category for players such as Banks, Biggio, and Arod, who are clearly great players, but who switched positions throughout their careers.

I think i'm going to do what Bill James did in his book, which was to just put each player in the position at which he played the most games.

if banks played his whole career at short, his defense would have been such a negative by the end that no amount of offense would have saved him (not that he was putting up much offense by the end anyway).

i don't believe that's the case with a-rod.

There's certainly room for debate between the best forgotten player in history, Arky Vaughan and Honus Wagner.

Would I participate? Yes*. Would I suggest doing one? No.

*And believe me when I say I would participate.

why's that? And I would definitely participate in the debate/discussion of the players... I used to just read through the Baseball Encyclopedia as a kid. The history of baseball, and comparing of different players, is really fascinating to me.

Should definitely do it.

Save it for after the Superbowl when we are all bored and baseball signing are about done.

well i'll probably start it a little before then, because I'm going to do about 3 per month. That'll be 3 months, then at the end we can do a top 20 overall player list... if I start after the super bowl, we'll already be into baseball season.

I'd start it in November after the World Series ends.

yeah that's the plan... a lot of "no" votes, but plenty of "yes" votes too, and the main thing was to see if there were going to be enough people participating to make it worth my time. Maybe once I kick this off, the mods can sticky the threads while voting is still active.
