I never understood the supposed "need" to move on emotionally or mentally from the Wood era. He's a valuable asset and it was good to have him contribute.

I don't understand it at all. Look, I like Wood, he's a nice guy. He has pitched some great games, he was so compelling in 1998, and he almost single handedly got us our only postseason series win since 1908. But I don't understand the attachment to a guy who has 71 career wins and has made only 30 starts twice in his career. I know people are latching on to what he was, a dominating rookie with an unhittable slurve, a fireballer with a 96 MPH tailing fastball, etc. But to call any part of Kerry's career the "Wood era" would be selling short the disappointment that is/was his career.

What don't you understand? When he's healthy, he's one of the best pitchers in baseball. He's the type of pitcher you pay to watch. When he takes the mound, you can feel the energy. Some players have that charisma, some don't. As for having 71 career wins? What does this have anything to do with what he's meant to this org?

I'm just saying that 71 wins represents how disappointing his career is/was. Fantastic pitcher, great guy, great stuff, tons of heart. I appreciate that about him. But to say that there ever was a "Kerry Wood era" seems misleading, when he was barely with the team half the time.

I wasn't nearly as excited as I thought I'd be. Maybe it was because of what had occured in the game to that point. But yeah, I kinda felt like I did when Wade Miller pitched last year. I treated the situation like this was a guy with all kinds of potential, but wouldn't be around for any significant time in the future. Want him to do well and get healthy, but probably not worth the money to re-sign if he does. Not worth the headache if he doesn't.

Unlike Miller, however, Wood managed to hit the heat.

It's not misleading. Part of the Kerry Wood era were the injuries. Sure there was a lot of disappointment, but from 1998-2004 Wood was a big part of the organization. And he's still an asset on the team today.

I cannot accurately describe what it felt like to be there when Wood started walking towards the mound last night. You could liken it to how it felt in old Chicago Stadium during the starting lineup intros.

Was glad to see Kerry back on the mound pitching. It was a much-needed shot in the arm compared to the weak offerings by Marquis and Ohman. Hopefully this gets Marmol some extra rest, and they're both relatively fresh for the stretch run.

Wood for closer! Caveat: Wood for closer does not mean that Dempster can be moved to the rotation, he must remain in the bullpen. See Dempster's career numbers as a starter

Man his stuff looked good last night.

True, but I wonder how they do that.

If I posted the portion of the ESPN broadcast where Kerry came trotting in (although I was very disappointed that ESPN didn't adequately capture the crowd's reaction), but posted it with keywords like ... I dunno, say "Woodrow Wilson", obviously only you folks reading this post would know what to search for, but I wonder if it would then fly underneath the radar of the YouTube gestapo - does anyone know? Any guesses? Or should I just try it?

I understand what Derwood is saying. Wood used to be one of the faces of this organization. Him, along with Prior and Sosa were icons on the Cubs. This team is completely different that what it was when he was healthy and firing. So many new faces, new attitude, it was kind of weird seeing him with this new group of guys. Hell, for most of this year, I forgot Kerry Wood even is a Cub.

I was cheering my ass off when he came out though. But I was biting my nails the whole inning hoping he had a great debut so the crowd would stick by him. The last thing the Cubs needed would be to have that great ovation only to have him give up 4 runs in his first inning. That would've been brutal.

No harm in trying and finding out. Would be useful to know anyways.

That's what I'm talking about. I want someone who was running their video camera while Kerry was walking out and the crowd was going nuts that we didn't really get to see to upload it.
