Matt Camp was also promoted to Tennessee to replace the DLed Tyler Colvin.

"I think they pretty much felt like next year he was going to be (at Double A) anyway so why not give him five or six starts there and let him get all the media stuff out of the way," Davis said in a cell phone interview late Wednesday night. "If he can go up there and have three or four good starts, that will be more important than what he did here."

Samardzija's first full pro season hasn't been exactly what he or the Cubs had hoped, but both parties realize he's got plenty of time to work on improving.

"I've improved a little bit, but it's still not where I want it to be," he said. "The season's been up and down, but I'm going to keep on working hard and trying to get better."

"Yeah, this is what I've been looking forward to," Atkins said. "It's nice to get promoted."

Daytona becomes less and less exciting to follow every day.

Oh well Tennessee gets more much-needed talent. Camp has to be one of my favorite minor-leaguers. Smokies have a great pitching staff now.

Colvin left a game two days ago and didn't play yesterday. I haven't found anything exact, though.

Yea, it was the Wood game. He hit a HR in the sixth (I believe) and then didn't come out for the 7th. He ran the bases fine. Weird

WHAT?!

This is weird. I hadn't heard anything about Colvin being injured, and to promote Smardz so early.....jeez I don't know.

I'm just hoping he doesn't completely bomb out.

Andy Lopez might replace Matt Camp at Daytona - he's supposed to be done with his rehabing at Fitch.

While you were in India, Lopez went to Daytona last week! My guess is Carter will play CF over Lopez, Harvey and Joseph.

Len said that Oneri told him that Samardzija has been pitching much better lately and better than his recent numbers suggest.. and they want him to concentrate on his 2 seamer.

Tyler Colvin has a sore shoulder and it doesn't sound major - he's expected back in one to two weeks. Adalberto Mendez and Paul Schappert down from Tennessee to Daytona.

the Samardizija promotion was all my fault - I dragged his bobble head down here to Daytona this week while we're here. It took showing up at the game on Thursday to find out he'd been promoted!

Oh well...hope he doesn't suck in TN - perhaps it will be worth it.

Cubs.com notes

Wilken has yet to see Jeff Samardzija pitch this season. The right-hander and former Notre Dame wide receiver was recently promoted to Double-A Tennessee. The numbers for the young pitcher are deceiving.

"There are very good signs that his breaking ball is coming," Wilken said. "His changeup is improving and the fastball is still good. The problems are when he's not consistent in his delivery, he's visible to the hitters. When you open up a little quick, the hitters have more opportunity to read it. It's just getting more consistent.

"I think this [promotion] will be good for him, also competition-wise, and it's a little more of a challenge," Wilken said. "It's not the most conventional way. I can read numbers, too. Sometimes you see progress when you move guys along and challenge them."

New Smokies state their case for staying

Roster shuffle ahead with injured players returning

By Nick Gates (Contact)

Monday, August 6, 2007

SEVIERVILLE — A pair of Tennessee Smokies are about to come off the Southern League disabled list.

Outfielder Tyler Colvin (shoulder) is eligible to return Wednesday and second baseman Gary Cates (broken finger) is projected back in 10 days.

Room will have to be created on Tennessee’s 24-man roster.

Who stays and who goes?

That’s Oneri Fleita’s decision.

The Chicago Cubs’ director of player development is scheduled to arrive at Smokies Park on Tuesday.
